Paris is a nice town. It is large enough to where you would have a good sense of community. As Jeff Foxworthy has stated many times, there are rednecks everywhere you go and most of us are guilty of it. There are jobs in paris and it appears to be growing. The university adds to the education of the locals and brings in people from all over the state. Dallas is a few hours away. At least you won't have to worry about all of the traffic that a big city brings.

Definitely know what you're getting into.

My wife and I are in the medical field. We moved to Texarkana from Pittsburgh (the one in PA, Not Pittsburg, TX ) to take an "offer we couldn't refuse." The size of the town was no problem as my wife is from a town of comparable size while I was from one much smaller. However, East Texas is more "Southern" than Texan. Assimilating into "Southern" culture was a bit more difficult for her. I was in the USAF and spent considerable time in the South and Texas, so it wasn't much of a paradigm shift for me. However, seeing as your spouse will be spending more time in the hospital than in your life, it may not seem like much of a change to him.

Paris is a much smaller town at 26K. Everything you might wish to visit isn't a 10-20 min drive anymore - it's a 1.5-2.5 hr drive. It's in the buckle of the bible belt (we're Baptists - so no problem for us). Most locals drive 5-10mph BELOW the speed limit, not 10-25 above (this will get annoying until you adjust).

I've done some locums in Paris & know of a few marriages that have been strained by the move from a "big city" atmosphere, to the more sedate, agrarian, lifestyle that you'll be moving to. Some have decided to break their contract for a move to Dallas or Austin to satisfy a spouses desire to move closer to a more fast-paced lifestyle that their more accustomed to. I know of one vascular surgeon who's decided to enroll his kids in a private school in Dallas (his wife is going there with the kids, while he works @ his practice) to increase his kids opportunities for college choice in the future. This is a guy who lives in Texarkana - 3 school districts (2 quite good), a private (Catholic) school & science magnet school.
