I had horny toads around me all the time when growing up in the city in California and yes, I too had a ground squirrel for a pet, kind of. He stayed outside and would eat right out of my hand, cute little fellow.

No, we lived just outside of Dallas when we played with the horny toads the most. We then moved to East Texas (Edgewood/Wills Point area) and we still played with them, but not as much. What's funny is it that years later I found one in our back yard in Arlington and I showed it my son who was about the same age as I was when we played with them. He was like...no way am I going to touch that thing! So, I tell him, it won't hurt you, here I'll catch it for you. Then I'll be danged, it took all I could muster up to grab that sucker! All of a sudden it looked simply ferocious to me! I finally got my son to rub it's head and showed him how to get it to 'go to sleep' (that's what we called it when we'd rub their heads and they'd close their eyes.) Funny, we never thought twice about picking them up, playing with them when we were kids. Course we used to put string around locusts and then get them to flying and we go round and round with them. As you can tell, we couldn't afford model planes!
