Thanks for the points desert. I don't really know what the rep thing is yet but i guess if my number doesn't have a "-" in front of it I haven't insulted anyone. I'll try harder.
You mention it was a good thing it didn't happen in a small town but the small town jails I have been in have treated me better than the Dallas County jail did (twice) and I got to tell you bro you don't EVER want to go to LSJC!
But the worst one I was ever in was the Mobile muni jail. That place was nasty. The best one was the then "new" Collin County Jail. I got tossed in that place the night of the very first day it opened. It had that "new carpet" smell. Yes the lobby was carpeted! Yes it had a lobby!
The cops from the podunk town that arrested me could not find the place and had to keep radioing in to get directions. I was relieved to get there because I had them cuffs on for over an hour.
Anyway, I bet you never even been arrested and you call them pigs. I have been arrested plenty, beat one up and broke his nose before they all finally got me contained and I don't hate them at all.
We live in a funny world don't we. lol.

Look up in the right hand corner under your join date and amount of posts you will see a Reputation. You start with 10. If you like what some one says or simply just agree with them, or even admire their effort they put into helping some one you can REP them by clicking on the symbol that looks like a scale. To the right of that is the red triangle which you click to report spam or some one who basicly is breaking the rules.
I admire your lack of shyness while telling us about your past. You are a hero in my book for punching that pig. Im not saying commiting crimes is right, it is not. Everyone makes mistakes. You seem like a good person.
Carry on..........

I think the issue here is poverty above all else. Wherever this is poverty there is racism, drug use, early death, insanity, socially unacceptable behavior, etc. These numbers make Tenaha look like a poor little town:
Tenaha, Texas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
$18k median household income, 40% overall poverty, 56% of children living in poverty. Not a good situation when Dairy Queen is the median job around, and it's not a good tax base either. However, this story coming out of the TX-LA border area isn't a surprise either. Some of the most disgusting stories in the USA come from this area.
And someone mentioned the Houston news didn't report on this... well you can also lay blame on Dallas and better yet, Shreveport. Dallas is as close to Tenaha as Houston is, and Shreveport is essentially a stone's throw away.

But the Houston and Dallas (and San Antonio) newspapers did report on it back in early February, as I mentioned in a previous post. Not sure about Shreveport.
I thought Dallas appeared closer to Tenaha on the map, though, no? I didn't actually look up the mileage, but it looks more northeast than southeast.
Either way, I'd never heard of it before this story.

My bad -- been out for a few days (firstborn daughter ) and skimmed over a lot of things here. The bashing that recently popped up in here is getting aggravating.
For distance, I used the 'finger gap method' (the way the crow flies) on google maps. Tenaha looked fairly equidistant to Houston and Dallas. It's about as 'Deep East' as you can get.

There is no way this would have happened to a lawyer or any law enforcement official traveling through Tenaha. The coppers' balls would have shrunk right up if called out by any one with any legal knowledge. That's the sad thing, they pick on and bully people like this only because they know they can get away with it.

Don't forget Tulia, Texas, in 1999.

And Coldspring, Texas early 80s. Good ol Sheriff Humpy Parker and his cronies who tortured motorists till they forked over all their money and valubles.
The world is a better place since he died a horrible death in 1999 from cancer just weeks after he got out of jail.
It's still going on folks, even in 2009.

Many years ago I worked on a project that involved conducting many focus groups with diverse community members. One of the questions I asked was "What cultural knowledge do you teach/pass on to your children?" People tended to reply that they taught their children things they'd been taught growing up, that were important to them, i.e. how to hunt, how to pray, how to show respect, etc... One group's response surprised me though. Group members were all black, and one of the many things they taught their kids was how to deal with cops in a safe manner. Because they'd all experienced injustices such as race profiling, harrassment, and so many other horrible experiences. It really brought the point home to me about how different our experiences were. My parents raised me to go to the police for help if I needed assistance, and this community had to teach their kids how to avoid the police, who in their experiences were not helpful, and quite often harmful and dangerous!
It's too bad that a few rotten apples spoil the image of the many. I have met quite a few police officers (getting tickets and also through professional activities), and I'd say that there's definitely a culture of the police. But within that culture, there is a lot of diversity in terms of personality and ethics/morals, just as in any profession (take lawyers, for instance ). So I hesitate to paint them all with one broad brush stroke, just as I wouldn't want anyone to make assumptions about me based on a few high-profile individuals in my profession, or my race/ethnic group.
That said, I'm probably going to avoid Tanaha, Texas, just as I avoid Denny's! Some behaviors are just too egregious to overlook!!!

Imho
I think what everyone needs to remember is where this happened -- Texas. Look at what Bush did for eight years. He bankrupt the entire country but no lawyer will get that money back. And I saw Brokeback Mountain.. ok.. the previews.. but everyone knows cowboys are repressed homosexuals and cops are one step away from that.. not that there's anything wrong with being gay, but being repressed will often lead to entitlement issues. It's just a shame. The best way to fix this issue to for Texas to raise the pride flag high and let the world know why they wear big hats, chaps, and high heels.
