Anyone like in Killeen area? Need help
Hello,
My husband and I will be living in the Killeen area and I am trying to find out about apartments there or anywhere WITHIN 15 minutes from there. Not willing to live in Temple, nor anywhere that's more than 15-20 minutes away. Husband and I chose NOT to do on post housing either. I just need help with finding an apartment. Anyone living in an apartment over there? If so, which one and how is it? Any trouble? Pros and cons please! It is greatly appreciated. I'm also worried about crime over there. I've heard people's houses get broken into quite a bit.

Try apartmentratings.com and look at the higher rated apartments. Look at the comments as well to try to get any perspective. Also, I believe they built a new apartment complex in Killeen just across the street from the special events center. There is another complex called the Stone Creek Apartments across from Ellison High School. Low crime area and not to far from the large grocery store, Wal-Mart, or any places to eat.

Independence Place Apartments off of Clear Creek Road, just minutes from Clear Creek Gate to post and in a very safe area.
though i cant figure out why anyone wouldnt want to take advantage of on post housing-very nice modern housing, lots of new ones, and the safety and convenience of living on post...plus free electric and water!

Independence place is expensive. I'm going to find out about on post housing. I get the feeling I won't be happy with many apartments in Killeen. I think I'm doing it too late though with the military housing since we're be there next month >_<

Yeppers, cant imagine why anyone wouldnt take advantage of on post housing. People "THINK" they willl make money off of living off post-well, it usually doesn't work that way, because even if they can find a cheap rental, electric is very expensive. Trust me, after one electric bill esp in the summer here, you will WISH you were living on post with free utilities. Really cheap rents are usually found way out in the country, like where I am, but then you have to consider the cost and time of commuting. Luckily I have farmer's electric coop so my electric aint that bad as the big conglomerates. And if you are looking for really cheap rent in Killeen, you will be living in the ghetto and be unsafe. All the decent rentals in decent neighborhoods base the rents on BAH, that is why Killeen/Harker Heights/Cove are all the same in price and expensive. They know how much they can milk out of a military family because the average BAH is public knowledge.
Being on post, you are much much safer...with MP's, etc. And so convenient to commissaries, PX's, and to work!
And the housing is gorgeous, at least for I think E5 and up. They look like McMansions!

I think a lot of people don't want to deal with the russian roulette of Fort Hood on post housing. Sure there are some really nice areas, but that being said there are also some that are old and run down. And you really don't get a choice. Plus, I wouldn't call living on post that much safer than living off post, it's all in where you go.
