You apparently need to reread my post. I never mentioned "hispanics". I mention Mexicans invading the US, sticking their tricolores flag in our eye, and demanding a laundry list of free (Taxpayer funded) goods and services.
Don't accuse me of "attacks on hispanics".

I wasn't referring to you when I made that last statement in my comment. I was referring to the numerous comments on several threads that are disparanging to hispanics, and Mexicans specifically. I was merely saying that we all can work together to fix the problem on the border, or the US hispanic population could get fed up with these types of comments and welcome the newcommers, get more political power and control the country eventually.

Hi itchy_nose,

I'm a nurse here in Manila. Like you, I have an offer to work there and it will be under working visa.I might consider working in Valley Baptist. By the way, may I know your local agency here? When did they file your working visa? Is it true that it will only takes about 6 months before you can leave for US? When are you leaving for US? Please help.

Default Filipino American in Texas

Makating Ilong and Extreme,
Congrats to both of you! I am not a nurse so I can't help you there, and I relocated from Hawaii to Vegas now San Antonio, TX; hence the name. So I can't help there as well because I live in San Antonio, TX (Stone Oak area) and not in RGV.

However, my neighbor, retired nurse from New York, frequent McAllen to visit relatives who are also in the medical professions, and she said that her relatives were one of the few Filipinos back then, and she (Tita) and her husband (Tito) are nice people.

My wife and I are both FILAMs and grew up in the states since 10-years and 3-yrs old. Wife was born in Cebu and I was born in Pangasinan. If you have any questions, please PM, and I'll try my best to assist.

Mabuhay!

Hello,

I'm finally here in Mcallen, Texas. I like it so far. When I arrived here it was freezing and they said it was hot here hehe. I got a flu for a month, so the flu shot was too late for me Food wise, I miss my mom's cooking of course, I guess I'm no fan of Mexican food, authentic or not. I like fajitas though and the tacos.

Most of the patients do not speak English but thats okay, I can always ask the nursing assistants to assist me and sometimes they have relatives who can speak English. Give me 3 more months and I think I can communicate with my patients well.

I'm moving to the Mcallen area this summer from South Florida. I also would like some input on the schools in the area. My daughter is 11 going into 6th grade. My son is transferring to University of Texas. And my other daughter is 18. I heard Sharyland is nice and North Mcallen. Please help.

Sharyland Plantation is one of the nicest areas in the McAllen/Mission area. You'll definitely like it. I just moved here from Austin and I'm telling you the Valley isn't at all bad. It's definitely slower pace than a bigger city, but it's not horrible. It's a good place to raise a family.

Amazingly cheap? I moved here a year ago--from northern CA and I don't find it that cheap--for a two bedroom we paid $750 and are moving to a new apartment unit where the rent will be $735. The national index is $750. And when you include A/C (utilities) you will find it evens out somewhat. Your utility bill in July will run around $200 no matter where you live. It doesn't matter which utility company you use (CPL is supposedly the most expensive)--Reliant, TXU Green, etc all charge almost he same per kilowatt. I do not understand why people keep reiterating how cheap housing costs are here. Do they not get utility bills? (Anyhow, the low rents won't last once, they will even out in the next few years).

Summers are oppresively hot & humidity is high, (your clothes will stick to your skin and you will want to take a shower 3 times a day) so much so that you will spend as little time outdoors as possible. And it does not cool off at night like it does in other locales (such as Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Tucson, northern California, etc.)
