Anyone know what the nicest lake the closest to Amarillo is? I have been living here for about 2 and 1/2 years and not everyone seems to agree what the nicest lake is (and within the closest proximity).

I've heard no one likes Lake Meridith, and Greenbelt Lake, the next closest one, is not that much nicer either. What about Lake Ute? Or Lake Friar?

Do I need to travel into OK for a nice lake or down south towards Lubbock? Maybe I need to go into NM, or SW Kansas or SE Colorado, I don't know, but I am mostly interested in jet-skiing or boating, and not really into fishing.

I looked that up on GoogleEarth and it is 300 miles away. Does anyone have any recommendations for closer lakes?

Lake Mackenzie on State highwayt 207 is about 30 miles south of Claude and Claude is about 20 miles East of Amarillo on Highway 287. Not sure whether Skiing/boating is allowed but it is a beautiful lake nested in the Palo
Duro Canyon's north side.

Lake Mackenzie is South of Palo Duro Canyon. Mackenzie Lake

There is a Lake Tanglewood N. of Palo Duro but appears to be mostly surrounded by a private gated community.

Given the drought in Texas you should verify if the lake is usable before hauling your boat to any of them.

189 miles to Great Plains State Park in Oklahoma

Possum Kingdom Lake is a really nice one.

The only one I'm somewhat familiar with is Ute Lake at Logan, NM but then I have not been there in many years. It used to be a nice uncrowded lake but I think it, like New Mexico, has been discovered in recent years by the marauding hordes and developers.
