Yes, he does make it sound easy. I didn't want to buy the book and the libraries around here didn't have it but got it on loan from a library in Amarillo.

Took a drive through DOSS this morning because I had a lead on some "cheap" land there for sale. Turns out to be hunting property and VERY rugged. Oh well, I did take some nice pictures along the way:

Tons of these all over the place:

I like those photos; they're quite nice. It surely looks like a peaceful and lovely area. Those low water crossings are quite prevalent in the Hill Country and parts of South Texas as well.

I would love to live on my own land too if I thought I could afford to buy it. Living in the honest-to-god country again would be great. I'm only in my early thirties and I've come to hate the idea of cities and their suburbs.

Small towns and rural areas may have their share of bad people yadda, yadda, whatever, but it's a matter of degree and numbers. I can do without large numbers of people now.

I talked to a realtor about this area and he was like "Oh that area? Well that's very isolated"...but it's only about 19 miles north of Fredericksburg. Beats sitting in traffic all day at any major city.

Anyways, still can't believe I only saw 1 car in the whole hour I was there...and it was actually not a car, but some guy driving an ATV with a black labrador in the back. I guess those are legal on FM roads?

I'm new here and I just found this thread. So tell me TexasNick, did you find your land? If so, where? Your blog link isn't in your profile anymore. I would have loved to read your blog.

Beautiful pics, TexasNick. I love the area and always enjoy going down toward Fredericksburg for the bluebonnets in spring and the peaches in summer. I have a job prospect in Brownwood and looking forward to going down to look around. Brown County supposed to be sparsely populated. From what I can tell it is border of Panhandle and Hill Country. But best of luck on your ventures!!

I use to hunt right by Doss for like 20 years, Still very a very german area. Many of the land owners go back to before Teaxs was a republic. People are very conservative. Very interesting to just walk the homestead becuase many thing are just left where they fell. Two model C cab work trucks that fianlly just broke down and all sorts of farm tools etc. Alot of developers have offered many alot of money for the land and even the stone fences built during the original immigration from germany.Don't even mention fredericksburg becuase they think it has been ruined by by peoplefrom dallas. houston and austin. I hunted on a big flat topped hill and no one went up there except the owner couple times a year to check the water well. I loved to sit up there and watch the valley areas on a cold November morning and walk thru the fields of wildflowers in the spring. We were lucky because the older hunters had been on the lease since 1925. In the last couple of years the ranch next door had been taken over by a son from dallas after parents died and started day leasing it. That was that in about two years. I can understand their concern becuase our was a year around lease and I would drive thru fredericksburg from 70 -97. I saw it go from a small town to a tourist trap type town.

Hi windmill,
Unfortunately, the blog was hacked sometime ago and I lost all my posts. There may be a backup somewhere, but my server guy is looking into it at the moment.

I do have lots of updates to add to the blog, including my move to Stonewall. I'll post about them soon!
