Actually, I wouldn't. Austin, as the Capitol, is representative of the state as a whole. Dallas or Houston or San Antonio don't have that claim.

For the record, lest it be thought it's because I lived in Austin and still live near it, I would have thought the same when I lived in Dallas or in East Texas.

I just looked at my old one (I couldn't remember what's on it because that, actually, is pretty unimportant in the overall scheme of things, when you get right down to it - if you're going to petition your legislators, please make it over something that really would make a difference in the quality of life for the citizens of Texas) and it has the Capitol on it. Might as well throw a fit because it doesn't have the Alamo (which it may have in the past, I don't know) or Reunion Tower or some big building in Dallas on it.

As for why the change for the new kind of license, I'm guessing that it's to distinguish it from the old one which has the Capitol dome on it.
Again, the captiol represents Texas so its being there has purpose. The skyline for a city represents only that city. I don't know how hard that is to understand?

3/4 pickup is only $50 a year ?

I called and asked how much my Ranger would cost to tag and they told me $150.

Okay, here's the schedule of fees as of January 2009. Light trucks (yours and mine) are by weight and are listed down at the bottom. Note that each county has an additional fee (listed up at the top, by county).

This link breaks down the fees for a vehicle newly registered in Texas.

So, looking at these two pages, $150 does make sense for getting your vehicle into the system the first time. After that, check the chart.

Has your Ranger been registered in Texas before? $150 would make sense if you were paying an initial fee to register it and get it in the system and get the Texas license plates and sticker for it and the first year's annual fee. But let me run to the website and find out.
You're probably right, I keep forgetting there are states that still charge impact fees to new residents so that's probably what the deal is.

We've been planning a move for over a year but just can't seem to make it happen what with mind changes and job situations, ect, ect..

It's fine to have the capitol building on the license, but to have a nationally obscure city like Austin is another thing. The Austin skyline isn't known at all. They should scrap the skyline idea all together, and put the Alamo, or the San Jacinto monument, or something else that represents the whole state.
Just removing the skyline is enough though throwing in those two state monuments wouldn't be such a bad idea.

Maybe so. I personally would like to simply see the state flag on the license. Nothing complicated or busy. It's something that is representative of all Texans.

I wonder what they would charge someone who still has a TX DL but had to register the car out of state (I was stationed out of state in the military and now I"m out of the military but working on the base until later this year when I return to Tx). I've kept my TX DL because I always knew I wanted to come back. Will they charge me the new resident fee to get plates? I still have my old plates.
