Default Moving to Longview,TX area?

I was born and raised in North Dakota and later moved to Montana when I married my husband. I have never even been to Texas but my husband was born and raised in Fort Worth. We are (for the most part) really tired of living in the North and want to do something different and move somewhere new before we settle down and have kids. My husband works for Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad and if he can find a job in the Longview area, we would try to move there. I just was wondering what it's like? Are they accepting of "Yankees"? I noticed the real estate prices were quite reasonable if not better than where we live now, which is nice. This will probably sound strange but what is the weather like there? I am used to 100 degree summers, short autumns, and extremely excruciatingly long winters(although for the first few months i enjoy the snow...) and virutally no spring, as is common on the ND plains. Also, what are the people like? Up here, the women tend to be bad about gossip and backstabbing but I suppose that is prevelent everywhere. Anyway, I would welcome any helpful info anyone can give about the area! Thanks so much!

-Montana resident

You should get along very well in Longview IMO. As far as weather, same summer but autumn will last all winter, then there is a short spring before summer roles in again. There is also considerable humidity which you may not be accustomed to.

There are ice storms and cold fronts, but they last just a day or two and then you're back to autumn tempuratures. The summer is muggy and mid-90's, but there does seem to be a good breeze.

If you're from MT and Fort Worth, you're not really Yankees.

I don't know Longview itself, but I do know parts of NE Texas. I have place just south of there in Rusk. They are just simple country folk, quite a few are heavy Baptist. Basically good, hardworking people. I think women are gossiping shrews everywhere, so I don't think you can escape that.

Being born and raised in Montana, I can relate to your winter time feelings. I have now lived in Texas for 15 years (Wichita Falls for most of this time, now in Corpus Christi). You will be in for a major weather change once you do move to NE Texas. Montana has a very dry climate pattern, with its very low humidities. NE Texas on the other hand, is quite humid, and will take some getting use to come summer! NE Texas does not have much of a winter, but they do get some snow, but more ice storms than anything else.

Just curious.. what part of Montana are you in? I was a Helena resident for nearly 18 years. I have been all over the state though, travelling. I do miss the scenic beauty of the western part of the state!

I'm from Eastern Montana--Glendive, to be exact. The town is backed up against Makoshika state park, which in it's own way almost rivals the beauty of the western Montana mountains. The town, however, is not so good. Very very little to offer. My husband and I have tried to make friends and the friends we made either loved to gossip/backstab everyone or they would come by the house and if we didnt answer the door immediately they would stare in the windows. Everyone in town is actually very rude about staring, sometimes open-mouthed, at everyone else. However not all of Montana is this bad! I've vacationed all over Montana and in most other places the people are friendly, polite, hardworking, and generally keep to themselves.
Thank you for all the answers! I dont know if I could stand the humidity but I think it would be very interesting to live in Texas for at least a little while! Does anyone know how the whole of Texas is as far as getting railroad jobs?
