I've been reading the Triangle forum and the grasses they use. I was wondering what grass is best for Texas, primarily the central Tx area. I have Burmuda and I don't really like it. My neighbors have St. Augustine and I definitely don't like that.

Those are the two most popular choices.

Bermuda is very drought tolerant but doesn't handle shade or partial sun well at all.

St. Augustine would grow in a root cellar with a sliver of sunlight but it requires a boatload of water.

Buffalograss and zoysia may be an option, but bluegrass is out of the question.

Our lawn has Bermuda and we have to deal with shaded areas but the water savings over St. Augustine makes it worth the hassle.

Thanks for your reply. I may try Zoysia in my back yard.

Some pictures please.

My St Augustine is as healthy and thick as you can get, I rarely water it. Rain pretty much takes care of that. I only water it when we get a long interval without rain, but that would be true of any grass.

Mixture of St. Augustine (for shady areas), and Bermuda is a good compromise. But you need to be able to apply varying amounts of water in different parts of the lawn. YMMV.

St Augustine will slowly overtake Bermuda grass.

And that includes your neighbors' lawns, too.
