Default Question About Lubbock, climate, etc.

I recently applied for a job in Lubbock and have a quick question.

If I hate hot, sunny weather...but love stormy (inc. tornadoes) and snowy weather...how well would I fit in Lubbock (scale of 0-10, let's say).

Also, are there any lakes/rivers near Lubbock? I miss water greatly, and it would be nice to have something within a reasonable distance.

Thanks!

Lubbock might be a 2-3 for your criteria. We're not near as hot as the rest of Texas, but we are pretty sunny, getting 250+ days of sunshine a year. The average July high is 92, and there are quite a few thunderstorms, though maybe not as many as you would get further east in the Dallas area. Lubbock gets about 10" of snow a year on average, but some years(like this one), there is no snow at all. There is not a ton of water here; it is grassland/prairie (the city is green and has plenty of trees though). There aren't many streams in the area, but there are a couple of lakes. There are two small lakes 10 miles to the east called Buffalo Springs Lake and Lake Ransom Canyon. There is a larger lake called Lake Alan Henry which is 60 miles to the SE which supposedly has good fishing. In town, there are many playa lakes (around 50 or so), but they are not for swimming or boating, more just for feeding ducks and maybe fishing. Overall, I would say Lubbock is not a very good fit, but it would be much better for you than Tucson.

Good post, Westerner.

I would say you'd be very weather-happy in Lubbock about 10 days out of the year. It snows some most winters and, altho, very few tornadoes touch down in town (altho one of the worst in the US did in 1970 - I lived to tell about), you can observe a lot of them flitting around in the sky looking down on you pretty often in the Spring.

Oh, and one more thing. Lubbock is known for having wide and sudden variations. I was reminded of that because we had a high of 92 yesterday, and today it is cloudy with a high of 65. It can easily be 80 one day and snowing the next. (That happened in March twice, but the snow didn't accumulate.)
