Texas has an extreme abundance of lakes with family oriented recreation. THE BEST lake period however is most likely Caddo. It is the largest lake in the South, the largest cypress forest in the world, and the only originally natural lake in the state. The experience is supposed to be breathtaking, and visitors hold that memory with them for a lifetime. With all that said, I haven't the slightest clue whether it offers the most recreation, but if you can do it at a lake you can probably do it here.

Other popular lakes I heard of are Lakes Palestine, Bellewood, Lake O' the Pines, Tyler, although if you don't enjoy living near Lake Conroe I can't imagine that most East Texas lakes would interest you. You should look into Lake Belton or Stillhouse Lake in central Texas.

Lake Palestine and Lake Conroe are awesome!

There is a resort in Lake Palestine called "The Village".

I'm not sure what you mean by "more to offer", but you should visit the Highland Lakes (Buchanan, LBJ, and Travis) as well as Canyon Lake out by SA... Lake Travis, if you can afford it, probably has the best school district (LTISD).
Lake Travis

Canyon Lake

Canyon Lake also has the Guadalupe river which is great for recreation such as tubing and kayaking...

Nevermind, don't worry about the link. It's for people who goes there for vacation instead of living there.

Some lakes i.e. Conroe IMO are overdeveloped. I prefer lakes that still have a natural feel and peace to them.

As for Caddo, not much recreation other than fishing, natural views, and boating. I would not recommend it for skiing. The advantage to that is that Lake O the Pines is just up the creek and you can ski there.

There was a time that I would have recommended Lake Athens as one of the best lakes in the area. Fairly small (1500 acres) but great bass fishing and pretty clear (moss bottom and spring fed). It's a pretty area.

BUT... the people running the lake (local water authority) are total crooks who are out to make money for their buddies with the way they do things. Lots of nice folks in Athens and Henderson County, but there are tons of meth dealers living in the mobile homes, and white collar crooks playing golf at the country club. Stay away.

Right now I'd pick Possum Kingdom, Canyon Lake, or Lake Travis. Owned property for years on Cedar Creek, but it has become too crowded on weekends and the lake is essentially polluted and muddy.

LBJ in Marble Falls is the nicest Texas Lake I've seen. Lake Conroe is way too congested and dangerous if you want to tube or ski.
