Some of my favorites are Lake Ray Hubbard (the I-30 bridge over both sides gives the feeling of a bay), Lake Travis, and Joe Pool Lake, with the latter two because of great scenic views that surround them.

We would be moving with 3 kids ranging in age from 5yrs old to 5 months old so good schools would also be a plus. If anyone has a good place please let us know we have a couple weeks off in June and will use that time to drive around the state looking.
You didn't like Lake Conroe???

Ha !!!

2 years of posting and I never agreed with you on anything. I do now. Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn are awesome fishing lakes. I have to add one more. My beloved Lake Livingston. At 93,000 acres it is one of the largest lakes in Texas.

I do agree with everyone that Lake Conroe is over crowded but it is beautiful. I know there are about 7 large lakes in and around Austin but they are on my list of things to do as I never been there yet.

If you're still interested, I also forgot to mention Lake Livingston. Certainly one of the most classically beautiful residential areas in Texas and probably the South. Surrounded by dozens of lakefront towns (including Huntsville, Onalaska, Livingston, Coldspring, etc.), beautiful old homes, parks and plenty of recreation, and a very thick tall tree cover. It has that New England look that you see on the movies (it reminds me of Amityville Horror a bit lol).

I'm a bit surprised it took 15 posts before Lake Travis was mentioned.

Pluses for LT:

- very high water quality
- surrounding beauty - steep hills, cliffs, and some shallow shorelines
- deep water
- very good schools (LTISD and Lago Vista ISD)
- good fishing though not for trophy size fish
- near Austin
- wide variety of homes from lake shacks to dot.com mansions

Minuses for LT:

- can get crowded on weekends
- highly variable water levels throughout the year, all docks are floating and cable attached
- too many high performance boats at times

Lake Conroe is now a suburb of Houston. The lake is way too crowded and I hate all the grass muck. They keep dredging all these canals for the full timers to buy McMansions on and calling it Lake Conroe. "Old Lake Conroe" days are long gone. It's becoming a commuter burb.

Completely agree about Conroe. My parents are looking for a retirement home near water and I told them I won't visit if they go near there. They are looking at Livingston and the Trinity River area right now. I keep telling them to go for Sam Rayburn. I love Lake O the Pines and Caddo but they do not want to go that far from Houston because they are afraid we (the kids) won't visit.

Default Pretty Lake in Dallas area

Lake Lewisville is gorgeous... we live off lake Lewisville and love it! We are close to everything (airport shopping 15-20 minutes away) and beautiful lakehouse. We live in the Gates at Waters Edge- its a gated community close to Frisco TX...

Check out www.mylakelot.com our kids love it here!

We were in Houston last week visiting friends in Kingwood, this area is even more beautiful with rolling hills similar to Austin feel.

Good luck in your search!
