Beaumont metro (Golden Triangle) is definitely above the Waco and Tyler metros in both size and population. That's probably where the perception came from.

I won't argue the size of the three cities but on a national level I would think Waco is better well known.

Not really. I'm Texan and I forgot to put it on the list. In fact I didn't even remember Waco until someone posted, "hey what about Waco." Most people outside of Texas haven't heard of Waco or Tyler. Most have heard of Beaumont and Lubbuck

Of those four, Waco is probably the best known, but... well... as tstone wrote, "not necessarily for positive reasons..."

Waco is definitely more of a major city than Beaumont and Tyler. Waco is actually known, and you could even say some-what internationally known.

Think about it:
-1950'S Tornado
-Mount Carmel Incident
-Founder of Dr. Pepper and Big Red
-Baylor University
-A movie is now being made called "Waco"
-Mentioned in tons of songs, shows, and movies

Aint that the truth.....seems like the only time Waco is in the news, its because of a murder of some sort.

I'm sorry but when I hear the term "major city", I hardly think of Waco.

Major cities, IMO, are cities that have 250K in the city, not metro. Waco is about halfway there!

Just because Waco is home to Baylor, David Koresh, Dr Pepper and Big Red, a few songs with its name in it, a tornado, etc. HARDLY makes it major.

Rich in History.....YES
Major.....NO

When Waco has an International Airport, a couple of Fortune 500 companies headquartered here, a population of 250K (not 125K), and not one but TWO large Universities located here, then maybe just maybe it can qualify as MAJOR.
Until then......Not so much!

Just because a city is Internationally known doesn't make it Major. Luckenbach, is also Internationally known, but it isn't major and neither is Waco.

Houston
Dallas
San Antonio
Austin
Fort Worth
El Paso
McAllan
Corpus Christi
Lubbock
Tyler
Waco
Beaumont

Not necessarily in any order of importance or size. I was just in Tyler and it's grown leaps and bounds since even the last time I was there. I'm gonna say Tyler is bigger than Waco, especially in population.
