Major cities, IMO, are cities that have 250K in the city, not metro. Waco is about halfway there!

Just because Waco is home to Baylor, David Koresh, Dr Pepper and Big Red, a few songs with its name in it, a tornado, etc. HARDLY makes it major.

Rich in History.....YES
Major.....NO

When Waco has an International Airport, a couple of Fortune 500 companies headquartered here, a population of 250K (not 125K), and not one but TWO large Universities located here, then maybe just maybe it can qualify as MAJOR.
Until then......Not so much!

Just because a city is Internationally known doesn't make it Major. Luckenbach, is also Internationally known, but it isn't major and neither is Waco.
Waco is considered a major city though....

History does have lots to do with a city, besides the fact that Waco use to be one of Texas's biggest cities.

Well, when I moved down to Dallas from New England in the 70's, Dallas was also known mainly for "not necessarily positive reasons..."

Yeah I have always wondered why Waco is STILL considered a major city though.......IMO it lost that title years ago when other cities started surpassing them by leaps and bounds.
Honestly I want Waco to flourish, but NOT become a major city. If I want that I can hop on 35 and head north or south 100 miles.

There are two major cities in Texas. They are Dallas and Houston. The rest are minor cities.

Mark-Tyler is Special will become famous soon enoughMark-Tyler is Special will become famous soon enough
You were talking about the Waco, Tyler comparision in population. It could be a little interesting to look at the differences in area square miles figures that accounts for the populations of cities. According to city-data.com Waco has 84.2 sq. miles and Tyler 49.3 but look at Odessa only 36.8 then Beaumont with 85 sq. miles. Some cities like Tyler rarely annex. Here most areas asked to be annexed.

National wise? Houston and Dallas. Regional wise? Add in San Antonio and Austin.
