I usually don't do that unless they say something intelligent.

Texas isn't great, it's just the mentality there by the natives. Pretty much the unwritten rule is "don't say anything bad about Texas to transplants". There's a woman in the Dallas forums who's name I won't say, jumped my case for complaining about the lack of tree's in North Texas one time. Ironically, she had been complaining about the very same thing just a year or two earlier but was now arguing against me telling me I was blind or crazy.

As far as cheap. I wouldn't say it's cheap, as it's not cheap compared to some of the lesser populated states. But vastly more affordable than California due to housing and rents. What a dump house in Cali will run you can buy you a McMansion in Texas.

It isn't cheap. Everything in Texas costs the same as anywhere else. Yes, the housing is cheaper compared to where there were housing bubbles, but everything in the stores, restaurants, etc. is the same. And property taxes in the cities are high. And you will make a lot less money in Texas or in any other right to work state.

I love it when people come straight to a Texas thread just to say it isn't great....

Why is NYC so bad despite being so expensive? Could it be cheap or expensive tells you little about anything else other than cost of living in a place?

The fact that Texas is so cheap, is what makes it great.

I am a Texas transplant and I love it here. The people are friendly, polite, a man actually will hold a door open when your entering a store behind him.

I have lived all over the world, Texas is a reasonable place to live. Homes are much cheaper but Taxes higher. Gas is the same all over, its getting higher. Utilities here are much cheaper to me than other places I have lived. In Las Vegas I paid more for utilities for a 1900 sq ft home compared to a 3110 sq ft home here. Even though water rates seem higher here I still pay less than I did there.

There are plenty of jobs and many new companies moving here all the time. Now I live near Austin so I can't say anything about the job situation in any other city but its good here in Austin.

I love the Texas pride in their state, city, their home!

Maybe Texas is a secret so lets keep it that way.

Cheapness, low standards, and poor quality all go together well in Texas. Aim low, and the result doesn't cost much.

I've been around the Texas-loving mentality for decades, and it still doesn't make any sense. It's just a mental trick that people play to avoid facing the dismal realities of the Lone Star State. I.e. keep convincing yourselves that's it's so great so you don't look how much better it can be elsewhere.
