from a retiree who is moving south-------------I think Texas has too high property tax.

Many beautifull --GREEN---areas in Alabama with nice houses and low property taxes.

Also, compare property taxes on houses on each side of the Texas / Arkansas border and it is quite evident

Many beautifull --GREEN---areas in Texas too....and what do you call low property taxes.....You do know we don't have a state income tax don't you ? Most states that have low property taxes make up the money with a state income tax....Guess it sort of balances out. Also if you're are retired and 65 you can apply for lower property taxes in alot of Texas towns...

Roanoke VA does look pretty nice in pictures.

Yes, Houston3, I am well aware that Texas has no state income tax.

As I stated, from a retiree's view, the property tax --will-- hit me much harder than the state income tax --would have

Check into the over 65 exemption. Over here the cut is pretty large if you have a normal house.

If you have a big fancy house, you will pay out the nose for your excessiveness. The 'excess' is defined by the government.

I agree. We have looked down in the Corpus Christi area and I really like it. We want to just pay off a small home there in the 140,000 range and even if we do that we still will be paying about 400.00 a month for property tax/insurance. I just can't justify that. It seems to me the property taxes out weigh the state income tax.

That's cheap. I pay in that range in Texas for a modest home, county and school only, no city.

I didn't even go all the way to Roanoke, but I wasn't far from it. That is one area I truly loved. It's just gorgeous.

So based on the logic of the original poster's title we should be wondering why the U.S. is so cheap compared to other places like London and Singapore. If the dollar keeps going like it is, we really will be one of the cheapest industrialized nations. Does this mean the U.S. is less desirable? If so, someone needs to tell all the illegal immigrants.

SW Virginia is very nice. The weather there in summer is very pleasant due to the fact that the elevation is a little higher. Roanoke is a pleasant town, and the economy there is supposedly on the upswing according to the data.
