Check out Glen Rose, little town about 50 miles south of Fort Worth, perhaps too small, but excellent schools, nice area, lots of farm land worth a look.

Saw some suggestions for the Palestine area...just moved from there recently, and was not impressed! Tyler is about the only decent town in that part of the state in my opinion. Would recommend Austin/Hill Country area instead.

A place I'd like to live in, and am familiar with, is Schulenburg, TX (Fayette County). Their schools are -excellent- and have a great track record for their graduates going on to college. They also have a local college "Blinn College" for those who want to attend near home. However, there are several big name colleges not too far away in Austin and Houston as well as Dallas.
If I could live anywhere in Texas, this would be the place I'd likely choose. Rental housing is very affordable (though SOME of the homes are over priced), as there are 2 very nice rental homes across from my parents who retired there, which go for, I believe, $475 per month. These are 2 bedroom homes, and you'd probably need something a bit larger. The people there are very friendly and helpful, if a bit nosy (most small town folks are), and the atmosphere is warm and slow paced.
Check it out on the web or however you so choose. It's hard to find negative things to say, other than employment not being what it would be in a large city. Hope this helps....

I agree.
That whole swath of Texas (halfway between Houston & SA/Austin) might be a good fit. I used to travel that area often & the grass is green, the hills are rolling & the burbs thankfully haven't intruded (too much).
Off the top of my head some towns to check out (including Schulenberg)...would include Weimer, Columbus, La Grange, Shiner, Gonzales, Halletsville & probably a dozen others.
