There are some really great suggestions listed in the posts above. We've got plenty of "cacti, scrub brush and hot, plains that stretch for miles" out here in West Texas.

As far as friendly people are concerned, you'll find that in pretty much any of the towns listed above. Texans are generally friendly people anyway, especially in the smaller towns.

Sounds like West Texas is what you are looking for. Weatherford, Mineral Wells, Brock and on word.
