Default Marfa Lights

The Marfa lights or the Marfa ghost lights are unexplained lights (known as "ghost lights") usually seen near U.S. Route 67 on Mitchell Flat east of Marfa, Texas, in the United States.
The first published account of the lights was written in 1957, and this article is the sole source for anecdotal claims that the lights date back to the 1800s. Reports often describe brightly glowing basketball size spheres floating above the ground, or sometimes high in the air. Colors are usually described as white, yellow, orange or red, but green and blue are sometimes reported. The balls are said to hover at about shoulder height, or to move laterally at low speeds, or sometimes to shoot around rapidly in any direction. They often appear in pairs or groups, according to reports, to divide into pairs or merge together, to disappear and reappear, and sometimes to move in seemingly regular patterns. Their sizes are typically said to resemble soccer balls or basketballs.
Sightings are reported occasionally and unpredictably, perhaps ten to twenty times a year. There are no reliable reports of daytime sightings; the lights seem to be a nocturnal phenomenon only.

Marfa lights - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As mentioned in another post I was there in December of 1995 and did experience the lights. I could say that some were lights from ranches and cars, but mixed in with these were some unexplained lights that seemed to move like bubbles in the atmosphere. I believe there is a natural explanation for the lights and that they could be ball lightning. I believe the same phenomenon also occurs around Fredericksburg or in Kerrville where reported lights of Indians on hill tops were reported back in the 1880's.

I think the lights are just automobile lights from cars on highway 67 being distorted by rising air. That or the ghost of chupacabras.

LOL!!

One would logically think car headlights until you know that these lights have been documented long before there were ever cars!

I've been at the sight a few times.

I believe that some are car headlights, they start at the same place, go lower like they are going downhill, dissappear like for a few seconds like something is blocking the light, then reappear and continue. I think those are not true Marfa Lights.

However, there are some the we saw that started very low in the horizon, and east of where the HWY 67 is. The stay about at the same place, brighten up, and fade. I believe those are real Marfa Lights.

I have a question in the "viewing area"--would you be looking north or southbound on US 67?

I think you would be looking southbound. If you were looking northbound, you would probably have a mountain blocking your view.

Yes it is looking south. The viewing area is a really nice facility.

When I was out there in 1995, there was a road stop but no viewing room like they have now. I imagine that helps to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. And it would be more fun, being around other people. I had to watch it from my car and I could not speak to anyone.

Maybe not. The first documented mention of the lights dates back to 1957. Earlier reports are not documented and are just anecdotal.
