Any ideas please about the best areas to take guests who are interested in seeing small towns in Texas? Have thought about Hill Country towns but not sure about the route to take. We will be driving from Houston..probably visiting San Antonio at some point so any ideas would be much appreciated. Also looking for ideas on Country and Western bars /clubs, dance halls...here or out of town. Also...are the Stockyards in Fort Worth worth a visit?
Thanks for any info

Take them to Fredricksburg, Texas. Hit up some of the vineyards around the area. Take them to Lake Travis in Austin as well

The stockyards are a MUST for foreigners who want to see the "Texas cowboy" experience. Watch one of the twice daily cattle drives with the Fort Worth Herd of longhorns: Fort Worth Herd - Cattle Drive - Stockyards

The Hill Country is always worth a visit. Fredericksburg has the German heritage, and is the heart of Texas' Wine Country. Bandera is known as the Cowboy Capital of the World and is neat for visitors to see. Gruene Hall is Texas' oldest dance halls, and it attracts top country music acts. You can't miss a visit to Luckenbach, which is right outside of Fredericksburg.

I endorse this message! You have GOT to take them to the Fort Worth stockyards, as well as the "cowboy" museum in the Fort Worth Arts district - it's really a good museum.

I would take them to Fort Worth to both the stockyards AND the arts district (so they can see the old and the new) and then drive straight down to the Hill Country and do exactly what the poster above just mentioned. Taking them to the San Antonio river walk as well as the Alamo and the missions would be a nice touch as well. GOTTA take them to Luckenbach in the evening and let them in on the casual jam fests that happen there just about every night.

Are you thinking of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art? Or the Cowboy Hall of Fame in the Stockyards? In any case, if in Fort Worth's art district, the Amon Carter has a large collection of works by both Remington and Russell - two of America's premiere western artists.

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art was established through the generosity of Amon G. Carter Sr. (1879–1955) to house his collection of paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell; to collect, preserve, and exhibit the finest examples of American art; and to serve an educational role through exhibitions, publications, and programs devoted to the study of American art.

Agree totally. Once upon a time it was considered a mostly "western art" museum, but today it has a much more eclectic attitude toward other art genres. Nice thing about the location is it's within walking distance of the other major art museums there - Modern Art and Kimbell.

For those interested in "western art" there is also the Sid Richardson Museum on Main street, in historic Sundance Square.
