Hi there,

What are some nice areas in Texas where there is easy access to public trails for horses, not totally flat, and not too hot/humid/buggy? We are horse people, thinking of a move, and trying to figure out where we would want to be. Thank you!

Public land in Texas is relatively hard to come by, especially for horseback riding. There are many riding clubs that have access to private land, but you will have to figure out where they are. I think there are one or two long threads on this exact same subject somewhere in the forum.

I remember the drought about 3-4, maybe 5 years ago and people couldn't afford hay for their equine stock. Bunch of people just turning their horses loose. Especially in more westerly areas of the state.

Many State Parks allow horseback riding, and have both trails and overnight camping facilities for horses.

Also, the LBJ and Caddo National Grasslands are very popular places to ride, and the parks also have horse facilities:

Unfortunately, most of these places are far from metro areas and job centers. If you're self-employed, then living in the rural areas near these parks may work for you.

Yep, time passes quickly, 2011. Yep, many trees in East Texas died. Tyler had over 80 days of 100 or above. DFW over 100 days of 100 or higher.

Worst since the mid 1950's.
