maybe I shouldn't be commenting...since I am so new to the area...but I haven't really seen any racism here. Which I am very glad of that. I am considered anglo...although my skin is pretty dark....since I am a mix of native american, irish, and slovak.... I was raised in so cal and grew up around lots of mex-am and every other nationality you can think of.
There are plenty of rednecks in the south...especailly GA where I just moved from....If you are ignorant and living in another time-period...GA might just be for you. hopefully anyone planning on moving here will research it carefully before they move here. |

well scubashawn..........i dont consider CC or South Texas as "the south" (i consider MS/TN/AL/GA the real "south" as in Dixie.
Texas is just Texas...a whole other country. South Texas is Mexico Georgia-the only racism i saw there was reverse racism-blacks against whites. i dont see any racism here in South Texas, however, the hispanic women are sort of suspicious of me, glare at me, and give me very dirty looks if their hubbies stare at me. but the elderly are VERY nice and hospitable and appreciative. i am not treated like a second class citizen here, like i was in Georgia, but i am just stared at like i am a freak. and of course i have no social life or dating life since i am an outcast here NOTHING redneck about South Texas-if it were, i would feel RIGHT AT HOME |

There is some fresh water in the area, but it's not very pretty. The Nueces River empties into Corpus Christi Bay and people fish on it but.....I don't know if I'd eat anything that came out of it. Choke Canyon isn't too far and people fish there too. There's also Lake Corpus Christi, but again, it's not all that. You could try googling those and see what you find.

Thank God, finally some decent posts about Corpus. Can anyone tell me what would be good areas to live (in the Corpus area) for renters? Not sure if I/we would be renting an apartment or home (preferably home) and what an average rate might be for a 2 or 3-bedroom home?

As with most things, it depends on what you're looking for. I think you could rent a 2 br/1 ba home in a decent older neighborhood for $700-$900, or you could rent a bigger, newer house for up to $2,000.
I live in the older part of town close to the water and really wouldn't consider living anywhere else because of the convenient location (for our workplaces and school) and the fact that the neighborhoods are so established. I'm talking about the area bounded roughly by Ayers/Staples/Airline/Ocean Dr. (Airline and Staples don't intersect, but if you're looking at a map, you'll get the idea). All of the new development is south of Holly and Saratoga and is known, appropriately, as the Southside. Scubashawn, who posts on here sometimes, just moved to CC and is living on the Southside and may be able to tell you about looking for a place to live out there. I don't know much about it. |

When I was in high school, lots of my classmates and college students would go down to Corpus or South Padre for spring break. Is that still the case? Or did you mean it hadn't been discovered by out-of-staters?

It's still a popular Spring Break destination--well really the surrounding beaches are. What I meant by "hasn't been discovered" is that people are pouring into the San Antonio/Austin corridor by the thousands and CC isn't seeing that type of growth. In fact, you'll see by the posts on here that many people think of CC as some sort of miserable backwater they've either left or would never consider moving to. While CC has problems, I think it's as good a place to live as any and better than lots of other places.
