Can't compare Arkansas to Texas. It might be a pretty state. but no way I would live there. Heard too many stories.

Texas is big and scary, Arkansas is ... what is is. lol

It isn't any better. And there, the highway you have to drive on is more likely to charge a toll.

No, the 'burbs are designed that way. And guess what, the 'burbs everywhere in this country are designed that way. You like to brag about your 10,000 square foot house that only cost you $15,000, but you fail to realize the reason you got a house that size so inexpensively was because you traded quality for quantity. It was your choice. It's not Texas' fault you made a decision that disagrees with the type of lifestyle you'd prefer to lead. Had you actually, oh... I don't know... moved into the city, then you'd probably like where you live. Sure the house might be smaller, and it might not be a house at all, but it would be close to things and you'd be able to avoid those pesky freeways. I just don't get how you can blame an entire state for your dumb mistake.

I'm not comparing them. Yes, you'd probably hate it there. I'm not sure you'd be happy anywhere.

I wanted out in the country because I breed German Shepherds and needed a few acres to start a large German Shepherd rescue with a rehab facility. I can't live in the city, I have to be with my animals.
My husband is a musican and needs space to record. City life wouldn't work for us now.

I am not used to a lot of traffic. Texas to me is very busy and fast. Sorry but it scares me a little sometimes.

Sure, I agree, unless you are very familiar with a place it is hard to judge it. I think though people are more on her case because of her overall attitude.

So please, pretty please, clarify for me exactly how your choices would have a different outcome in any other 'burb in any other state. If you think Texas is fast and busy, you'd likely be mortified by Southern California or the Northeast. It sounds to me as if you either need to go live alone in the boonies (where there's probably not much need for a german shepherd rescue service) or make peace with the results of your decisions. Frankly, I can't for the life of me pinpoint exactly what you find so distasteful about Texas. Everything you complain about is a reflection of the reality of suburban life everywhere - yes, even outside Texas. Is your glass just half empty? Did the great state of Texas insult your mother's honor? Where exactly is the rub? Please explain.

I will not drive the freeways in the metroplex. Of course and thank goodness, I don't live up there but I can assure you if I did, I would manage without entering a freeway on ramp. My children live in Ft. Worth and Arlington and I live south of them in rural Texas. I drive up there to see them and avoid the freeways at all cost. It is so much more pleasurable and definitely a prettier drive.

I have driven on I35, but it has been south. Well, that's not true. I was able to go north but only as far as Lancaster. When my daughter lived in Lewisville, she would come get me at the Wal*Mart parking lot in Lancaster and I'd spend the weekend with her. She claimed I wouldn't be able to get there without the interstate; I never checked it out, but I'd be willing to bet one can. The same thing occurred with my guy friend when he lived in Dallas. One must do what works for himself/herself.

The furthest south I've driven on I35 has been to New Braunfels and that was quite a few years ago. For some reason, it did not bother me (it's a straight shot), but that traffic in Dallas and the crazy freeways going every which way is too much for my nerves. Of course, the idiot speed demons and lane whizzers don't help matters much. I hired people to take me to Southwest Medical Center when I was dealing with some allergy issues. I mapped it out so I could drive myself and avoid the freeways, but my daughter told me those areas through which I had to travel were undesirable, hence my decision to have someone take me via the interstate. I really didn't care, but she was concerned. I've always wanted to try it but after living here for 31 years, I doubt it will ever occur now. It really isn't necessary.

I'm from southern CA and although it has been many years, I did drive the freeways there. I didn't like it, but I was able to do it. I must admit I used to find alternate routes to get from place to place. To name a few places, I was able to travel to Disneyland, Newport Beach, and LAX from Burbank and avoid all freeways. It can be done. It seems after I had my children, I stopped driving on them.

It is a true phobia, fear, or whatever for some of us, and it's not worth the way it makes one feel. If there's a will, there's a way. I know this sounds a little extreme and I'll probably never do it, but I have a route mapped out to southwestern VA from central TX avoiding ALL interstates. I don't know if this can be done for all destinations, but I can venture an educated guess that it can.

There is no need for anyone to mention extra time and extra miles. That is immaterial to those of us who choose to avoid the craziness on the freeways.

My children have the mentality that if I lived in the areas they do, I'd never be able to go anywhere. I don't know what else I can say to them to convince them differently. Of course, it doesn't matter because unless it was cause by an emergency situation, I will never live in a congested city again.

P.S. TexasTheKid....There is need even out in the boonies for animal rescue, maybe even more so. The problem of dog neglect, abandonment, and cruelty is rampant here. Kudos to anyone who is trying to help our four-legged pals no matter where the person lives. If more people cared, more of God's wonderful creatures wouldn't be dumped on the side of the road left to starve. Oh yes, and there are those who shoot their pets too when they get tired of them. Wow, don't you just love it? It's a very sick world.

I live in East Dallas and I can avoid freeways and tollways almost every day of the year. Most everything I want to do is within a 10 minute walk or drive.

and that is the way it is in almost every suburb of Dallas/Frot worth as well as most places. Roanake, has almost everything within 10 miles that anyone would need. I don't understand the conserns unles there is a need to drive into Dallas often. I don't like traffic either, especially since I have been away from it for awhile.

You know what I'm kind of finding funny now that I think of it......... in many areas of Colorado (where the op raves about having lived) you can only get from Point A to Point B by either highway or a really narrow backroad (aka a pass in that area of the country) that twists and turns thru the mountains and sometimes doesn't have guardrails and in some cases is not even paved. I was on many of them last week . I was even on the highways in Colorado. Some areas up there on the highways can be ! Talk about idiots and flying..... And you'd think that if they actually lived there fulltime they would KNOW not to ride their brakes or brake too often going DOWN the mountains. But nooooooooo, we saw many of them hitting the brakes way too often. You'd think they would know to go to a lower gear to avoid overheating their brakes.
