The need to ask the question is an answer to itself.
I just finished John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley in Search of America, and if anyone really wants to gain any slight understanding of why Texans are so fundamentally Texan and proud of it, I strongly urge you to read the first chapter of section four in that book. And, it's a hell of a lot better written than anything gracing the digital pages of City-Data.
Well, in defense of city-data, it never pretended to be great literature. My answers as to why Texans are so proud are that (1) it was once independent, (2) it is very large and has many different landscapes and cultural influences, and (3) lots of popular myths concerning historical figures and Texans in general.
catman, that is probably the most succinct, accurate summary of the basis of Texan pride. The history of independence, the vastness and the diversity of Texas all contribute to a sense of unique pride and devotion on the part of Texans toward their state.

And that pretty much sums up Steinbeck's take on it, though he says it much more floridly.

Maybe that tagline that read, "City-Data: Eat your heart out, Tolstoy" was all in my imagination.
