Default Hi Conner

Congratulations on your future move down there too!! We have to wait and see if my husband gets the job that he is interviewing for, but we are pretty sure that he will.

I am sure that you have been reading all of my posts about my bug and snake phobia, how do you feel about it?? I didn't used to be such a chicken about stuff, but it seems like the older I get, the worse I get!!

The people down there do seem very friendly, whenever I ask a question, a few of them always answer. It makes it so much nicer when you have someone to communicate with, about somewhere that you have never been to. Good luck to you both too!!!

Default Bear's mommy-

Snakes: we live in a rural subdivision a few miles outside of Bryan, and I've only seen three live snakes in 12 years out here. When we lived in town for 10years before that, I never saw one.
Spiders: A few garden spiders are normal, which are good to have. I did see a black widow in a wood pile once.

I like living here because it has a small-town feel with all the city conveniences. People are very friendly. There are lots of activities for all ages. There are plenty of small towns within short driving distance for Saturday morning flea market or antique shopping. Houston is just an hour 1/2 away; Galveston beach is about 4 hours away; lots of lakes and forests within an hour or two from here...

Would I want to live anywhere else? Well, sure... a picturesque little New England town where it snows every winter.... a beach-front home in Hawaii... a cabin in the Smoky Mountains... but for now, I'm happy where I am.

Default Thanks Texasgal2

You have really put my mind at ease now, about the snakes and stuff. I am getting very excited to possibly be coming there to live. I can't wait to go to all the different places there, and meet lots of really nice people!!

I'm currently a graduate student at Texas A&M Health Science Center and have lived here for 6 years.

As far as the weather goes: humid, temp range of 30 - 100 F, lots of rain compared to other areas of Texas. The area traditionally has lots of thick vegetation and the entire region is considered the "Brazos Valley." However, development of the area has reduced this vegetation noticeably.

Traffic is minimal except for at peak times on streets with stoplights. However, construction on streets is perpetual.

Housing can be very affordable. I currently rent a poor looking apartment for $200 a month, but you can find decent housing close to campus for $500-$600 a month.

There is very little economy to speak of that is unrelated to the university. The few jobs I can think of are farming, construction, banks and stores, and hospitals.

Finally, the people are very friendly. They tend to lean towards the conservative side on political issues. You can stop almost anyone and ask a question and they'll be happy to help you. The official greeting on campus is "Howdy!", although newer Aggies are less and less likely to use it. During the summer, the town is essentially dead.

Hope this is helpful.

I can't recommend a hangout, but I sure can recommend Freebird's burritos. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! I have not had one in several years and I'm missing them badly. They make a mean burrito!
