Help with a hotel along I-10 shortly after El Paso heading East
We'll be driving a moving truck out to our new home in Cedar Park here in a couple of weeks. We will need to stop for a night somewhere along I-10, within a couple of hours east of El Paso.
Can someone recommend a nice and safe hotel that is not along the US/MX border? What town should I look in, is is it just about the middle of nowhere?
Thanks!

There are several in Van Horn, which is about 120 miles east of EP. Not much in between, though.

Given your criteria, your best bet - and about the only realistic choice - is to stop in Van Horn, TX, which is right off I-10. It's less than two hours (about 120 miles, as Stillkit said) east of El Paso.
You won't find four and five star lodging in that region , but there are a number of national chains in Van Horn that should work. On the way to Phoenix last month I stopped at a brand-new Hampton Inn there; it's clean, has good rooms, a decent free breakfast, and offers free internet. I've also stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. It's a step below the Hampton IMO, but it's still a decent choice. Those are the only properties in Van Horn I can personally recommend. It's wide open desert once you get out of the El Paso orbit, so besides Van Horn, the next closest town convenient to I-10 that can offer any real choice of lodging is Ft. Stockton, and that's an additional 120 miles east.

Heading out of El Paso, there is a motel in Fabens and one in Fort Hancock, which is about half way to Van Horn. There is absolutely no reason to think that a motel will be unsafe merely because it is near the Mexican border.
There are 14 motels in Van Horn, so you will surely find something.

If you know something we don't know, tell us what it is. Also, tell us your line of work, so we can all avoid trouble-magnets like you.

Unless you need help, or are the one causing trouble, you have no reason to ever meet me while i'm at work.
Lets just say that I have a wealth of experience at the US/MX border.
Some folks run from the fire while others run to it. But I try to do my best to avoid dangerous areas in my off time.
Thanks again for your suggestions...hotel reservation at the Hampton Inn has been made!
