I was going to give a genuine reply, but the thread was already ruined by the second post.

Five out of ten responses? Wow. I prefer my conversations to be sweet and my beer to be bitter, but whatever. This state houses people of all political and religious stripes. Apparently you're just incapable of locating like-minded people. Sounds to me like a character flaw in you, not the state.
For the OP: Fredericksburg, Luling, Palestine and Marfa for the small towns. If you're ever going to "get" Texas, those are good primers on the subject.

Ever heard of self censoring FOA? It's what polite people do when they don't know their audience.

^ What a clown...
In reading the "posts" by the above person (whom I am too contemptuous to even address directly) I am reminded a bit of something I once read in the old rules of the Code Duello in the Southern United States. That is, while it was dishonorable to refuse a challenge by an equal...there was nothing at all wrong with ignoring it when was flung down by rabble. It simply demonstrated your disdain for them. Which is all the posts of "this person" deserve...

Definitely hit some of the small towns mentioned. Austin's good if you want to experience Austin, but that's not really "Real Texas." I'd say the large city that could best claim that would be San Antonio.

So, I'm looking for small towns that are oozing with Texas culture. Let's leave the big cities out of it. I know east Texas is very different from West Texas, so, if you like, you may classify a town as best in that particular region.
So, let 'er rip! Where should I go, what should I eat, drink, see, and do?

I am envious of that trip.
My suggestions in no particulat order;
Strawn, Mary's Cafe and the best chicken fried steak.
Bandera -OST
Stephenville
Hill Country BBQ in several towns, Taylor, Llano, Lockhart, Elgin, etc.
Glen Rose - just a neat town
Salado - another neat town
Jefferson -antiquing and good cafes
Buffalo Gap - Perrini's
Kilgore - Oil is alot of what Texas is about.

Four of which were done over 20 minutes, responding to the same post.

I think Cowboybootnut's ideas are all excellent . But I would add one thing. After sampling the cuisine at all these locations end up your trip in Austin (a.k.a. California on the Colorado ) and take a dump- no one will even notice.

I don't think this person has a positive thing to say about anything, she even does this in the Austin forum. I try and ignore it.
