For Texas Blues guitar, you can't beat Bugs Henderson. For Alt-Country/oldie folk, Jimmy Lafave gets my vote!

I love music - period. I've played in punk bands, rock bands, church bands, and am now in a band doing strictly West Texas Blues/Americana. Rap is just about the only thing I don't really like.

Same here. Goth, ska and old school punk but chose metal since it was the closest thing to what I listen to.

Your Favorite Musical Genre

Funny, speaking of musical genre. I've recently seen the three productions of High School Musical (I, II and III) and found them to be entertaining. I always was a fan of the american musical and appreciate the revival of that experience.

If you have a young one in need of quality entertainment and exposure to cooperation, team work and a group coming together these shows would be a good place to start. Not to mention could keep them occupied for a good portion of a day.

Cool thread. I'm living out of state now, but I was born in Texas and will always think of myself as a Texan, so I hope I don't offend anyone by responding.

I've been a musician for over 30 years.

I have very wide ranging tastes and listen to music from all over the world and from all eras.

It would be easier for me to list the musical genres I DON'T like. I don't like very much of the following types of music:

Rap/Hip Hop. I've heard a few things here and there that get my head bobbing up and down, but most of it doesn't grab me much. I really despise gangsta rap, but I find some hip hop somewhat soulful and funky. It's just not something I feel the need to seek out or listen to on purpose.

Opera. I love a lot of classical music, but never cared much for opera. I've heard a few things that move me, but mostly it seems like people singing bad poetry in a language I can't understand while they are overacting. Don't get it.

Modern "country" music.
I'm the biggest fan there is of old country music, from the stringband (pre-bluegrass) country of the 1920s and 30s up through the great 50s era (Hank!) and into the 70s "outlaw" country. No offense to anyone, but I find most of the stuff coming out of Nashville that they call country just bland and silly for the most part. Sounds more like Vegas to me. Most of it reminds me of tired old boogie rock or 70s AM radio soft rock with some twang added and lyrics about checking your lover for ticks and getting impregnated in a Wal Mart parking lot. Meh.

Some forms of metal.
I dig a lot of classic metal (Black Sabbath!) and bands like Motorhead, but a lot of metal doesn't do much for me. 80s MTV poppy "hair metal"--I'll pass. And death metal with Cookie Monster vocals--no thanks.

Outside of those things, I like a little of everything. Old pre-WW2 rural blues and jug band music, early hot jazz, some R&B and funk and soul (especially the older stuff...1950s and 60s), some other forms of jazz up to the 60s (Coltrane, Monk, Mingus) and some ska and reggae, world folk music, etc.

I guess I'm mainly just a rock and roll guy. Bo Diddley, The Sonics, The Stooges, Rolling Stones, The Ramones, The Cramps...from rockabilly to garage/psych rock to some classic rock (CCR, ZZ Top) to punk of the 1970s and 80s.

Man I really miss playing live.
