Default Lufkin?

Hello, All. I did do a forum seach for Lufkin info but was hoping to get some more detailed and current thoughts from people who lilve there or know the area.

Let me begin by saying my wife and I are both Texans. I was born in Austin and she was born in Tarrant County. However, both of us (unfortunately) ended up spending more time in Oklahoma over the years.

I still have friends and family in the Austin and Nacogdoches areas.

A potential job opportunity has sprung up in Lufkin and I am thinking of chasing after it.

I would really like to hear any thoughts about the Lufkin area, from natural scenery to the quality of the school systems to crime to taxes to housing and other cost of living data.

We have moved so much over the past few years. I am hoping to move to a place where I have a good job and where my family might finally settle.

The only thing I don't miss about Texas is the heat and the fact it never snows in most parts of the state. But I can live with that (especialy after living through the last Winter up here in a rural small town in upstate New York where the taxes are also killing me!)

One final question...we would likely be looking to rent a home at first. Any advice or suggestions or info on the rental situation in Lufkin? We would be looking for a 4-bedroom home or so, and one that would accept our sweet and very clean family dog.

Also, if there are any areas within an easy commuting distance from Lufkin, I'd love to hear about those.

I very much appreciate any responses and look forward to hearing from some locals or people in the know about the area.

Wish me luck--maybe soon enough I will be relocating to my home state!

Thanks for that info. My best friend actually lives in Nacogdoches.

Anyone else? Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Lufkin is a little larger than Nacogdoches & has better access to highways IMO. Last time I was down there a few months ago passing through on my way to Houston I saw that HWY. 59 is undergoing some major reconstruction with overpasses, widening, the whole 9 yards. If only Tyler could learn from these other cities in Texas when it comes to building efficient roadways with less traffic lights, instead we're getting a rarely traveled tollway.

Appreciate the responses. I've learned that the applicants for this position have been narrowed down to a Top Ten and I'm still in the running. Wish me luck everyone!

I live 45 miles south of town near Woodville. I like Lufkin very much for a trown its size it has a lot to offer. Lotta good small communities all around Lufkin. If so inclined you might move out toward Lake Sam Rayburn as it offers some nice recreational opportunities. It is east of town out Hwy 103. I've actually considered a move to the lake myself and commuting into town to work.

I'm sorry I have little to offer on specifics other than my impression of the town. I like Nac too but like Lufkin a bit better. One thing you might consider is the health care system is better in Lufkin with the 2 hospitals. My wife works for a satellite hospital in the East Texas Memorial System.

I grew up at Lufkin (near what is now the College) but have been away for about 40 years. It remains one of the most beautiful areas of Texas but there is just too much humidity and too many people and traffic for me anymore. Luckily though the people there are nice folks.

I now am in the process of retiring to the wind-blown and wide-open spaces of the Texas south High Plains that I have loved for many years. The High Plains is not like east Texas where one can take it it or leave it. You either love this place or you hate it and there isn't any room between those two choices.

At any rate, best of luck if you decide to move to Lufkin. If you say hello to anyone there and you will likely be speaking to one of my cousins. My ancestral families have been in Angelina County since the 1830s.

And yes, I forgot to mention Nacogdoches. It too is a nice town but it too has changed much since I a short time at SFA.
