Default writing retreat in texas?

Hi everyone,

I hope you can offer some advice. I'd like to come down south to work on my book for a week, so I'm looking for somewhere that offers some beautiful views and options to go for a stroll/walk into town, but not somewhere with a lot of distractions/attractions/tourists, as I'll want to focus on writing rather than having too much fun... I don't drive and will be flying from NYC so it has to be somewhere I can reach fairly easily from an airport by train/bus/taxi - I don't mind a fairly long journey from the airport so long as it isn't a complex journey.
Either location or accomodation tips would be much appreciated. Ideally I guess I'd like a very small town in a picturesque setting.

Thanks so much folks.

Wow that's a tough one. Many artists have located in Alpine TX out by the Big Bend area. That country is truly majestic and would be beautiful this fall. Getting there is tough since you might have to fly to Midland & drive down. There might be some type of charter out of Dallas.

The City of Alpine Texas

If you can make the trip it would be well worth the effort.

yeah i know it's a tough ask! i love the idea of western texas but the transport options are so limited - i.e. alpine has one train a day from el paso and it doesn't run sundays/holidays. it's not driving that's causing the problem.

Couple of places come to mind, maybe Frederickburg-2weecottages is the name off the place

Mo-Ranch Conference Center
Laity Lodge
Not sure how you might travel to those but I bet if you call them they make have some options. Peaceful places but no walking on main street...

Another very nice west TX city is San Angelo. It has commercial airline service and old west charm. I lived out there for 15 years and it's a great laid back town that is still large enough to offer a good meal & place to stay.

Other thoughts... try the Gulf coast. Port Aransas or South Padre would be a great place to spend a week in the fall or winter when all the tourists are gone.

San Angelo: Maybe rent a place along the shore of Lake Nasworthy?

Steel man, I see you are from San Antone. I would think anywhere near Kerrville, Garner State Park or the Frio River would be classic in the Fall.

As a writer myself, I could definitely see me getting away to the Texas Hill Country for inspiration! Fredericksburg is nice, but a little touristy at times. For my last anniversary we rented a 1850s cabin at Settler's Crossing and it was very very peaceful. Kerrville area is nice and close to San Antonio. Wimbereley is known to house may an artist and author and is close to both SA and Austin.
Personally as a native West Virginian I'd love to hole up someplace in WV! It is the closest thing to heaven on earth as far as scenery! Happy writing!
