The question you need to ask isn't which city has a lot of different races but which city is not segregated. Dallas has a lot of different races but it's segregated and you don't see a lot of different races interacting with each other such as interracial dating etc that you see in larger cities like Chicago. Dallas is socially conservative because it's considered the heart of the Evangelical movement and Bible Belt.

I wouldn't say any of the Texas cities really have this quality. You have to remember Texas is still a Southern state and was a member of the Confederacy in the Civil War. That will never change. Culturally their roots are still very southern regardless of their ecnomic development. If you are moving there due to its excellent job market, I understand but if you have a choice, I wouldn't move there.

To answer your question, I would say Houston. It's less Evangelical than Dallas and more Roman Catholic and they have a larger Hispanic and African American population. That being said, there is still racism in Houston and even affluent minorities are affected there. Read this article about Houston. This person was a professional baseball player whose father was a professional baseball player living in an affluent suburb of Houston called Bellaire. The police racially profiled him and followed him home although he did nothing. They then shot him in his own driveway. This was a national publicized event that was on ABC's 20/20 and CNN.

Chicago is also segregated. Does the Southside of Chicago ring a bell?

Racisim & segregation exists everywhere in the world to some degree or another, its just more pronounced here in America because of what happened some 400 years ago.

And even more pronounced in our northern cities because of what happened during the 1960s.

That story is nothing special to the Houston area; problems like these tend to be more worse in major cities than smaller cities anyway.

Wow, people really live in the past.

When I went to Northeast (MA, RI, NY, and CT). That is the most segregated places I've ever been to. I guess these White Liberals feel insecure with other race so they set up their own school, gated community, or like restaurants. It was like a shock to me when I went there few weeks ago. The only place I could find diverse is New York City. Boston wasn't like Houston or Dallas, it's very white place. The only people that were diverse were tourist (I assume because of backpacks and cameras).

I just couldn't believe what I saw in Northeast. Now, don't tell me "You haven't been to this place", oh please...

For Southerners, we are more tolerant to other race.

I can tell you his assesment of Dallas is way off. Dallas isnt socially conservative. The suburbs may be, but the city isnt.

He is convinced that Dallas is a bunch of racist, bible thumping, rednecks. Ive seen it thread after thread. He's wrong. Plain and simple.

The people Ive met here are some of the friendliest and most welcoming people. My wife and I get no looks for being mixed race. Ive never heard the questions "where do you go to church?''. We had our gay couple friends visit this last weekend and they loved Cedar Springs/Oak Lawn. Cities like Dallas, Houston, and Austin are very gay friendly places, even if Texas isnt.

And about Texas being tied to southern roots, some of it is, but in Large cities like Dallas and Houston, you wont see this hardly at all.

Dallas is also statistically the most liberal city in the state by voting pattern (talking cities not MSAs).

Southwest Houston (the axis from from Bellaire to Sugar Land) is the most ethnically/racially mixed urban area that I've ever seen. The usual 1/3 :1/3: 1/3 between anglo whites, blacks, and hispanics that occurs over the already quite mixed overall Houston metro area is altered here to 1/4:1/4:1/4:1/4 with the addition of south and east Asians of the "New ChinaTown" area in Sharpstown/Alief, Indians-Pakistanis along the Hillcroft corridor, and the more affluent Asians moving in large numbers into SugarLand and Bellaire. Bellaire Blvd and it's crosstreets now have Chinese sub-titles, believe it or not.
