Texas Tech Hires Alberto Gonzales Disgraced former AG
No one is claiming Texas Tech is an academic giant, however hiring Alberto Gonzales who was forced to resign for misleading Congress and who would have faced charges had he remained, is a new low.
So far 41 members of the faculty have written a letter of protest to Cancellor Kent Hance who they may have forgotten was a political hack during his own career.
A private school can do what it wants, however this is over $100,000 of our tax money.

That guy is an absolute rat of a human being and a traitor to the Constitution of the US. And I dont throw either of those terms around lightly. Its a disgrace he is now being paid a salary by the taxpayers of Texas.

Amen. gonzales was behind the firing of those US attornies who committed no wrongs whatsoever, merely political expediency. It is shameful that that disgrace is on the State payroll. |

That lowers my opinion of Texas Tech considerably, which was fairly high previously. What possessed them to hire that jerk?

Kent Hance was the guy who beat George Bush the first time he ran for office as a Congressman in west TX---as a democrat ---
then in the mid 80s he became the Republican he was at heart--he ran for govenor against Bill Clements in the republican primary and lost--then was appointed to Railroad commission and won his own term a year or so later-he has tried to be govenor a couple of times but can't cut it...
He probably knows all the members of the Tech board better than his brother in law since many of them are oil/gas people...
now that he is a Republican Bush probably likes him a lot--but it took over a year for Alberto to find a place to light...
he should be indicted and convicted and go to prison--guess that would cut short his stint at TT...

Cal Berkley hired John Yoo until there was a near riot.
Stanford had Rummie on the payroll for a while too.
So it isn't just Texas

John Yoo was hired at Cal-Berkeley in 1993 he probably already had tenure. His hiring was based on the many works that he published in his specialty. Cal sometimes hires people from both the far right and far left, to get a diversity of opinion. The only time Cal-Berkeley and Texas Tech should ever be mentioned in the same sentence is when one is presenting data along the lines of " From the best to the worst universities...
By the way the reason Cal outranks Harvard among the percentage of high school students that were in the top 10% of their class, is because having "pull" doesn't usually help getting into Cal as opposed to Harvard. One just has to be smart. The same with professors, Yoo might be nasty- I really don't know but he certainly was smart. Can we say the same about Gonzales... or Bush?

One can argue if this is a good or bad hire....& if AG was a good or bad public servant. & these would definitely be Political & National arguments.
But if it's Texas Tax dollars paying for his salary, wouldn't it be proper to discuss it on a Texas forum? |
