My grandmother whom grew up in Waco & has a brother living there, speaks fondly of the place. Though she didn't attend Baylor, she's a Baylor Bear fan all the way. Her family used to own an Italian grocery store in one of the older areas of Waco.

When I lived in Killeen we would also get a lot of concerts and shows that did not play in Waco. People like Tyler Perry, Rickey Smiley, and other comedians made stops in Killeen but not Waco back in the day. And that time Lil Jon, Ying Yang Twins, David Banner, and Choppa came to Killeen; there was a lot of Waco folks that came down for that. 50 Cent had a scheduled concert, but it was cancelled.

And don't forget the Family Days, where the schools closed down and everybody went to see Ludacris, Ja Rule, Jessica Simpson, XSCAPE, TI, And1, Trina, and lots of others.
That's not overshadowing. Most army towns are going to get those types of events. That is nothing special to Killeen.

Here are some interesting figures I dug up.

Tyler, Tx.

Area
- Total 128.0 km2 (49.4 sq mi) - Land 127.7 km2 (49.3 sq mi) - Water 0.3 km2 (0.1 sq mi)

Population
(2008) - Total 108,772 - Density 655.1/km2 (1,696/sq mi)

Waco, Tx.

Area
- City 247.4 km2 (95.5 sq mi) - Land 218.1 km2 (84.2 sq mi) - Water 29.3 km2 (11.3 sq mi) 11.85%

Population (2007) - City 122,222 - Density 521.5/km2 (1,350/sq mi) - Metro 230,213

Judging by this it appears Tyler is in fact a lot denser than Waco & only slightly smaller in population.

Did I not just say that it was because of the army base? Besides, all of those events weren't there for Fort Hood. A few years ago, there was a pretty small yet noticeable market for black entertainment/media in Killeen that attracted several artists and comedians. It was mostly due to the radio stations that were pretty popular at the time.

And I also never said that Killeen always overshadowed Waco. I said it did sometimes.

Back than Waco overshadowed most cities in central Texas besides Austin. The difference is Waco is a more established traditional city compared to Killeen which is more suburban and new. I'd take Tyler over Killeen any day. Waco also was a noticeable market for black entertainment and still is. Strange Fruit Projects, Verbal Seed, Cool Cats, etc

Okay... I never said that Killeen was the next big thing. I just used it as an example as Waco sometimes being overshadowed. I voted for Tyler, though.

I might have missed it, but in all my years living in the region I don't remember any major acts coming to Waco. They all came to Killeen.

Those are rap groups that started out of Waco. Btw, Waco was pulling in big name performances even before Killeen was heard of.

Okay. If you say so.

But this isn't about which city is more established, or which of the two has more to offer. This is about the fact that Waco is not always the most known city in the region. And that is, in fact...a fact.

I mean even Killeen itself is at times overshadowed by Belton and Cove.

Pretty cool to see Tyler being second when they have the least population compared to all others in the poll except "others".
