Hope everyone is enjoying their Labor Day weekend!
I guess it is getting back into the real world of work after a summer off that has kept me from keeping up on the Texas Forum. BUT -- before I chime in on the "Northeastern" and "Secede" threads...I just gotta stay in character and start a new poll! LOL
The initial idea began the other day when several of us got to talking, and somehow the subject of the National Anthem came up! It lead to the challenge of, can (any of us) recite the words of the first stanza?
Can any of y'all?
Soooo, this is a two part poll/quiz.
First? WITHOUT looking it up, being honest with yourselves and everyone else, how many of you all can quote all the words of Francis Scott Keys' first stanza? O' say can you see...
I confess, I THOUGHT I could, until actually challenged to do it! However, I think I did better than any of the rest of them, by damn and high cotton!
Second, is the poll. What song would you prefer to be the National Anthem of the United States of America? Or...do you like the one we have?
Here are some links to some of the choices which will be presented:
Always thought the Star Spangled Banner just drags on and on. Whereas most anthems sound like they celebrate their nation, ours almost has the feel of something you'd hear at a funeral. I think American the Beautiful would be better personally.
I love our National Anthem and it part of our county's history. For that reason I am not sure I want it changed, but I do prefer America The Beautiful. It is easy to sing and not so drawn out. The Star Stangled Banner is almost impossible to sing...

Yes, I know the words, have for many, many years. It amazes me though how many do not. I guess they don't say the Pledge of Allegiance or sing The Star Spangled Banner every morning in school anymore. Such a shame!

In my area in Texas, they say the Pledge to both flags, U.S. and Texas. No, the SSB isn't sung anymore, but I never forgot the words from long ago when it was sung frequently. I can still remember America The Beautiful and America. Those are the ones we sang when I was a child...yes, every morning in my California school. Well, in elementary anyway. I can't remember if we did in JH and HS.
I voted for The Star-Spangled Banner and yes I do know the words (I know, it even surprised me!). I feel such pride everytime I hear it. I love America the Beautiful too!

Yep, me too. Guess I had an extraordinarily patriotic elementary school for drilling it into us that well.
