Tyler Area Location Advise
Hello All!
I'm a new east Texas resident currently living and working in Longview. My fiance, a lifelong Tylerite, has found work and continues to live in Tyler. I like Tyler and would prefer to live in that area despite the drive to Longview, but I'de like to keep that drive time to a minimum. I'm not sure if that means living on the east side, maybe around UT Tyler, in Lindale or somewhere else. I'm sure some people must make the same trip but don't know of anyone personally. Any advise and opinions would be much appreciated. At this point, I'm uncertain whether I want to rent or purchase a house. Thanks for all the Help!!

Lindale would probably be a good compromise. I have a good friend who moved to Lindale from Longview 2 or 3 yrs ago. She is in the medical field and has to visit numerous locations in east Texas, but most locations are in Tyler & Longview. She chose Lindale because of easy access to both cities as well as many other locations she visits in northeast Texas.

East Tyler, Tanglewood Area would maybe be a little closer because you would take 31 to Kilgore to Longview, rather than Interstate 20. Rentals can be found in Tanglewood, yet a nice pretty area of maintained older homes or newer homes nearby need U.T. Tyler. Then you would be close to the rest of Tyler by living in that area.

You're still looking at a 45 minute commute at the least, no matter what side of Tyler you live or what side of Longview you work. Minimum 45 minutes.

Yep, 45 minutes should cover it. Done it many times from downtown to downtown easily in 45 minutes.

I can handle 45 minutes. I used to live in a small town outside of Houston, which is were we would go to do most anything. Years of of those small trips has made me numb to drives less than an hour in length. I'll just need a smaller car to lessen the effect on my walet. So, to clarify, there is no advantage, in my case (no kids), to living in Lindale? Thanks again for all the help.

Yep, school system would have been it. Unless you like to zip off to Dallas every week. Property taxes lower in Tyler, mainly because Tyler has the lowest property tax rate in Texas of any city over 15,000 pop and lower than almost all of them under 15,000 for that matter. Just .20 per hundred valuation. Of course the obvious things to do in a city of about 100,000 as opposed to 5,000.

Also Smith County is completely dry except for restaurants, in case you didn't know already. I have to remember this when I'm coming to visit my mother and want to bring a bottle of wine. Get it before the county line!

As always I vote for Lindale! The normal posters on this board know I wouldn't live anywhere else! If you have any questions about the Lindale area....I'll try to answer them!
