Tell me about Waco
My fiance and I (in our thirties) are planning to move to Waco in or around Jan. So we are trying to learn all we can about Waco. Yes, we know there is "some" crime, but we are from bigger cities and we are not too worried about that. We do not want to live in the heart of the city.
What are your favorite things to do there? Are there any special events, rodeos, etc. that occur there. What kind of groups can you join? (Like softball, sports, arts and crafts, etc?) We currently live in Georgetown (moved here in May) and they have a market day called Second Saturdays with various vendors that sell their stuff.
What are some of the traditions in Waco? Are there any special events for the holidays? What do people do for fun there? What kind of community building events are there?
We would also like to have information about Gholson. Is this a safe area to live? It looks like farm area and country, which we really like. We are quiet people and want to live in a quiet, down-home area.
Also, we are curious about the Baptist churches there. Is there any you would recommend for a couple who will be starting a family in a few years?
Thanks for any help you can provide. If you have any other interesting ideas or facts to add, Please, jump in!!!

Hi, I moved to Waco in 2004 and really find it to be a good fit for me and my family. I've always felt that how you experience a place is much more about attitude than the actual place. You sound excited to move here which counts for a lot.
Waco has a ton of interesting things to do, just depends what you like. Several great museums, great opportunites for outdoor activities, shopping, eating...pretty much anything a person needs.
One of my favorite websites with good Waco information is the Waco Toursism site. Definitely check it out. It's an excellent site and you will learn all sorts of stuff there. Official Waco, Texas Tourism Information - Hotels, Attractions, Restaurants, Museums and more.
I live in China Spring...love the community. There are many neat communities in and around Waco. I don't have extensive knowledge of Gholson but understand it to be a good place to live. Again, probably just depends on what lifestyle you are looking for. If you want country and maybe some land, it's probably well worth a look. But like I said, we have tons of good communities in and around the area. Many beautiful places people don't even realize are here.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I will do my best to answer. I have a good perspective since I have lived a lot of places in my life and know what it felt like to move here. Hope this helps. Good luck with everything!

Gholson is just a stop by the side of the road, not much of a town and where there are homes, they're quite rundown. There are much nicer areas in the country, China Spring being one of them.
Mark...It shows to be her first post.

Has anyone seen any decent amounts of acreage for sale in Waco for under 100,000? Just curious. Thanks for the info!

I am looking to move from the Houston area up to Waco, and you will find some good deals on raw land in and around the area.

I'd think you could find some really cheap land anywhere outside of Waco. Possibly in the China Springs area.

OK, what type of acreage, how far from, good shopping, medical? What size tract for what per acre? With or without utilities, like electricity, community water? Are there gullies, streams, ponds, flat, good for growing, all these factors, So what is cheap? Or a really good deal? Waco terms or Houston terms? If so what's a Waco price? Houston Price? Man there are so many variables? I used to be a real estate broker, retired, and these are just some of the questions you need to ask and have settled.

If you are looking for land and care about the school district then look for land in the China Spring or Midway ISD areas. China Spring stretches to the northwest of Waco along the north side of the lake and out China Spring Highway and Wortham Bend Rd. The land within Midway ISD covers the Spiegleville area along Highway 6 on the west side of the lake and the area along Highway 84 out towards McGregor.
If schools are less of an issue then that opens up a lot of pretty country further west in the Valley Mills area. It should be somewhat cheaper out towards Valley Mills because it is a bit further out and somewhat less desired from the perspective of the schools.
