Moving to Plainview
My husband just got a job in Plainview. Anyone have any recommendations on where to look for a house? Are there any areas of town that should be avoided? No children so schools aren't really a concern. Thanks for the help.

Well, Would it be possible to move to Lubbock or Amarillo, then commute to Plainview
Because Both cities have more amenities than plainview

We've been talking about looking in those areas too - maybe even Canyon. Don't want to have too long of a commute, but also don't want to be too far away from the things that we'll need like stores, airport, restaurants, etc.

I spent a week in Plainview one night. Just kidding...I thought it was an interesting little town. The Furr's Cafeteria had good food. I'd consider the occasional rough weather if considering a lengthy commute.

I recently bought a small retirement farm in southern Hale County and I find Plainview to be a very nice town. It has a Walmart Supercenter, a Tractor Supply (one of my favorites), a McCoys and 84 Lumber for building supplies and a Furr's Cafeteria (another favorite) as someone has previously mentioned. I believe the current population is about 22,000.
My farm is about halfway between Lubbock and Plainview, so I can choose either place for shopping but sometimes choose Plainview if I don't feel like dealing with traffic. Regarding Plainview's housing areas, from what my Plainview realtor told me, the southwestern part of the town (west of I-27) has the newest and most modern homes. Having come from Albuquerque, I was stunned at what $250,000 would purchase in Plainview, or for that matter, the Texas High Plains.
Hale County does have rough weather but usually in the spring when we get heavy thunder showers and, more often than most Texas counties, tornadoes. However, my family once lived in New Orleans and in Washington D.C. so an F-4 tornado out behind the barn is not scary to us. We love the south High Plains of Texas but then we are retired and have been here before.
Best of luck in your move and in your future.

Hey High Plains,
My best friend and her husband live in your neck of the woods, sort of. They have a house in between Olton and Hart. They consider Plainview "the big city." There is a great BBQ place in Plainview called "Weekends" run by a couple of guys only on the weekends. A mom and pop type place. Anyway, I love visiting my friends, and can't wait for the day when I can move to Lubbock so that I can be closer to my friends in the Panhandle and can hike and get the photography going at the Caprock and Palo Duro.

Your friends are probably out on highway 168 between Olton and Hart? I haven't been through Hart in over 30 years when I drove a semi-truck from Muleshoe to Plainview while I was still in school. Back then I recall Hart being hardly more than a stop light but I need to drive over there some day and see if anything has changed.
I was just in Plainview this afternoon visiting the locksmith (lost motorcycle key) but I'm not familiar with "Weekends" bbq place. However, thanks for the tip. We will check it out in January when my brother and his wife plan to visit from deep east Texas. Like me, he loves the High Plains and wants to retire out here. If I can ever get my family's properties sold in Albuquerque and in Muleshoe, Texas, I plan to help them do it if they will let me.
I agree on the incredible beauty of the Caprock breaks and Palo Duro Canyon. Its been too many years when we rented horses at Palo Duro for a memorable ride through that beautiful canyon.

I used to drive from Lubbock to Plainview one day a week. I'd say it's the best town in the Panhandle outside of Lubbock and Amarillo. It has good shopping, a good hospital, a nice Hastings Books, a 6 screen theater that seemed to keep up with the bigger releases. There's a YMCA and a nice golf course there too. It's weak on newspapers. Lubbock has a good airport that's about 40 mins away. Nicest neighborhoods are on the southwest, a nice middle income neighborhood is on the northwest. There's a nice country neighborhood several miles to the west. Good luck!

PlnvwTx
My job may move me and my wife to Plvw,Tx also. We currently live rural southeast of Lubbock right now and may have to re-locate there soon. We are looking in the rural Plvw area for housing....feel free to email me if interested in trade out living...or your selling your house by yourself.
