The cities of Port Neches and Groves total a population of around 30,000 ... yet playoff games regularly turn out 30K+. Only other program enjoying similar fan support would be Odessa Permian.
I can vouch for this! My senior year we, Stephenville, played PNG at the Astrodome in the 4A state championship (1999). I had never seen so many fans in all my time playing or going to state championship games as PNG had at that game. (And that was our 4th state championship game in the 90s so I had been to a few.) It was very impressive.

When was the last time South Texas schools won 5A state championship Mr. trash talker?

The best team I can think of out of South Texas is La Joya. Whatever team down there that wins big loses big against teams like Austin Westlake.

It looks like East Texas is definitely underrated.

The better off schools in the burbs can afford the proper facilities, not just a big stadium with the newest synthetic turf and well maintained practice areas. It's conducive to putting together a good all around team, even if it's not loaded with a bunch of so-called "can't miss" prospects. But in the inner cities you still have a lot of raw talent that when brought to college with the right coach can get turned into an NFL quality player.

A few years ago I saw Johnny Knox, rookie receiver for the Chicago Bears, play for Channelview High School. His team wasn't very good and he could use some refining of his skills which were there but just very raw. At the time it was hard to picture him in the League, but there he is today. This state produces a lot of NFLers, and going to a game on Friday night you never know who you might see and what they might go on to do.

Which schools have the best football teams and which schools have the best football players aren't always the same thing.

yeah, there are two kids from little Rusk,TX that play for the Redskins now.

The burbs have great facilities..but the true, raw talent is very minimal. I agree with JFRE, the best teams don't really equate the best players.

But for the powerhouse TEAMS, I'd say Katy, and what's the school in South Dallas that kills everyone? And I think there's one in Euless with a large American Samoan population, whose team is a monster.

Don't forget the Judson Rockets. They've won 6 titles and have appeared at State at least twice that.
