Do a search on Abilene. There's been lots of topics already opened up to discuss just what you're asking.

I'm a native Abilenian and even though I moved away for a little while I moved back here in the mid-90's. Abilene has a low cost of living compared to most other cities in Texas. The public schools here are generally very good as well. As far as the crime rate goes, I haven't seen any recent stats on that but generally speaking I'm sure it's no more than any other city of this size (about 120,000 in population). Abilene is a nice place to live overall and has very friendly people. There's a few nice public parks, a decent zoo, and a few good museums here as well. Check out the link below, they have a lot of good general information about the city. If you have any more questions, just post them here and I'll be glad to give you some more feedback.

I've been there a few times. It's easy to get lost in. I imagine after one gets accustomed to the layout and finds out where things are, it's okay. I should go out there again and reconnoiter.

Abilene is an Air Force and ranching town. It's about typical for similar cities, although the crime rate may have risen in the few years since they legalized the sale of beer and wine. It was totally dry for decades.
