People are shot just being outside. I will trade Phoenix for any city in Texas anyday! As far as cowboy towns and if that is your main thing, Abilene and Amarillo are known for being cowtowns but for shopping and such Lubbock is good and I would avoid El Paso, trust me on that one. I still think if you choose around Amarillo, go to Canyon, they have a great canyon to explore too. Lot of great people there and the people around Abilene are very friendly. So really any city you pick is good except El Paso.
Why not EP? I am visiting there in Dec..

El Paso reminds me of Old Mexico, that dirty look that you see down there. It is high in crime. It has a little over 500,000 but it will have over 200 rapes, over 20 murders and thousands of cars stolen and homes broke into each year. If you live down there, move to Las Cruces, New Mexico, it is way nicer and newer and a lot less on crime. El Paso is the only city in Texas that just doesn't feel like Texas to me, but that is just me.

I would also like to know why not El Paso? I have seen you say this on other forums aswell.
El Paso has a low crime rate, cheap housing, 300+ days of sunshine, nice mountain/sunset views, low cost of living, great restaurants, really friendly people, great schools, beautiful airport, I can go on and on.
So again, why not El Paso?

El Paso was just rated as the 2nd safest large city in the U.S. for the third straight year. It has been in the top 3 for ten years. There hasn't been over 20 murders in quite a while. Last year the murder count was 11, for a metro area of over 700,000..that is really low! This year there have been only 5 murders so far in the El Paso area.

Believe it or not, Las Cruces average crime rate is actually higher than El Paso's average crime rate, and Las Cruces is almost ten times smaller than El Paso.

NT, I have a right to my opinions and I have been to El Paso at least 20 times and I have some family down there and I can tell you I don't think it is a safe place neither does my family members in NM and Texas. It is a border town and there is a lot of crime. It looks dirty to me and that is MY opinion and I respect yours but that is how I feel, period. Oh and Juarez, Mexico just across from El Paso is one of the most dangerous cities in the world, you know the city where all those women and people are kidnapped and murdered and where the Mexican drug gangs are located? If you are still living in dirty, dusty El Paso, all I can say is Good Luck!

Crackerjack, I never once said you don't have a right to your opinion. Sounds like you have more issues than I thought.
Being ranked as the second safest large city for the third straight year is one of the main reasons more and more people are moving to El Paso every year. Whether you or your family members think it is safe or not makes absolutely no difference in the real world whatsoever, so go ahead and think whatever you'd like. But the actual true facts say otherwise. As for Juarez that is a whole other city, on the other side of the river, you are not forced to go to Juarez ever, so what is your point? Plus the violence from that city doesn't spill over like in other border towns in Texas.

Yes, I currently live in El Paso (moved back after almost a decade in Southern California) and thanks for the good luck, but I don't need it, I have recently purchased a very beautiful large house in a great neighborhood that rivals any in the country, the best part of it all was that it cost me a fraction of what a house would cost in other large cities. My family feels safe in this town and there are plenty of things to do here. The people around here are friendlier than any place I have ever lived in. The fact that Las Cruces has a higher average violent crime rate and is ten times smaller says a lot about El Paso's low crime rate..but go ahead and believe whatever you like.

There are dirty places all over this world El Paso, Phoenix, Tucson, Los Angeles, Albuquerque, Las Cruces all have their ugly sides, they all have their beautiful sides as well, and if you think that El Paso is the only dusty city in the Southwest..then you need to get out more often.

May I ask you where you are from Crackerjack?

El Paso definitely has its own charms....and a very different atmosphere from the rest of TX. I almost moved there 10 years ago, but things fell through twice. I love the mountains and the fact that it is in TX with NM right there, too.

It does have a seamy side, but then so do all large cities...just goes with the territory. I talked to my car insurance agent, and for the same vehicle/coverage in ELP, my rate would double because of the high car theft rate.

I know now that I would have gotten tired of the heat, just like I have here, so I guess it's a good thing that it didn't pan out!

Enjoy your new homey house!

NativeTxn, you seem to have the issues. I just stated what I feel. It has only 18 percent white people and you have to know fluent Spanish to live there. Everytime I went through there I mostly heard Spanish. There are a lot of illegal aliens there and they do not report crime by and large for fear of being deported and it is well known with people there as with all my family, who happen to be Hispanic on my brother's wife's side, and they say the economy is depressed there and crime is under reported so more people will come there. Just read the El Paso thread and read about others saying what I say about it being a depressed economy, dirty and strictly a Spanish city. I feel like I am in Mexico there and not America. Enough said. If you like El Paso, that is your right, I just know I am glad I don't live there.
