Default Winter in Rockport

My wife and I are winter Texans. A fellow from San Antonio has offered to rent his Rockport condo for the winter. (Jan, Feb. & March). Nice unit located on the water with a boat slip. I really don't know squat about this area as we have always gone to the hill country. We spent last year near Wimberely and loved it. Lots of sun, great people, and the cue. I looked at the climate data for Rockport and while it is warm in winter, without much rain, it appears that it is cloudy about half of the time. We are from north central PA, where the sun can hide for weeks at a time in the winter. I'd like some info from folks here about the winter climate, things to do in the area, and crime rate. Any and all input would be appreciated. Stoney

Corpus Christi is real close to Rockport, so you will find lots of information on Rockport and the area in that forum.

Such as the following, for a variety of opinions:

It is true that the area has somewhat fewer sunny days then the average US city in the winter time. But it still has lots of great weather, comfortable temperatures and lots to see and do in the area, especially if you enjoy nature and wildlife. I think you will enjoy the change. We live in Austin but we kept a sailboat at the Key Allegro Marina in Rockport for 3 years, and frequently spent weekends on it all year round. And we still visit there for a long weekend once or twice a year. The area has low crime (in 2007 it was below the national average) and lots of good people. It is a more authentic working coastal city then most of the beachy areas. Real people living out their lives rather then mostly tourists visiting.

I think we are about ready to sign on the dotted line. I love the hill country, but change can be refreshing. I love to hunt and fish. If anyone has any tips on winter fishing from shore or charter, please reply.

My folks have a (2nd) home in Rockport. Rockport is a fishing community. Some of the fish I know they have brought back are: redfish, drum, and blacktip shark. I will ask my mom to give me more ideas for your fishing request. Much of the area is on a ledge and you can walk out (in hip waders) half a mile or so and have the fish coming right up to you. They also charter services sometimes to go out (deep sea fishing). The area has a lot to offer: it is safe and charming and other nearby communities can offer more entertainment. I like Port Aransas (for entertainment options).

I don't know too much about the hunting, but do know there are tons of birds down there.
