Texas info~~
Is Texas really that bad?? We are thinking about moving to Texas and nobody seems to have anything good to say about it...of coarse these people do not live there or have never lived there so I think it is kinda funny for them to put it down. Anyway I would like to hear some positive things about Texas and for the people who actually LIVE in Texas if you want to tell me the negatives thats fine at least it will be coming from a person that actually lives there We are hoping to visit the Austin area and suburbs this spring. I have been to Dallas area...like grapevine and southlake area but after doing research online I am thinking we might like Austin area better. We have kids..young~~7,5 and 2 we can work from home so jobs are not really an issue, we like lakes and rivers camping etc. Also does anyone know if preschools are popular in Texas, I know in California they are, not too sure about Texas.

LOL. Not surprised to hear people in CA badmouthing TX...we're all hicks you know... You can have an MBA and a PHd, but the minute you say you're from Texas, you're an uneducated, bible thumper.
Yet Californians are moving here in the droves.

I just came across your inquiry and wanted to chime in. I moved to texas over 20 years ago and love it here. You have tropical weather, snow, mountains, deserts, intellectuals, free spirits and everything in between. Pre-school is available although you should check the area you decide to move into for requirements.
Austin is a great place to be. Especially if you like hills, water and great diversity. By this time, you may have already visited Texas and made your decision. As for me, the people, opportunity and the culture made it the best move I could have made.
All success to you.

Really bad compared to where?
If you like having more control of your destiny, less interference from the government, lower taxes overall, more space, cleaner air (except Houston), and friendlier neighbors Texas is a fantastic place.
If you don't like warm weather, or need pristine beaches, or mature mass transit, like lots of government services, Texas is not for you.

The opposite is true for us. When I mention Austin or San Antonio (here in the midwest), most of the responses are really good, but you are right, the people I speak to in California seem to not like it, yet like the other poster said, they are moving there in droves.
I never thought about Texas until my husband mentioned it and then after doing a lot of research decided to scope out Austin to San Antonio area. It is beautiful, really nice people and so many different type areas. It is so huge. I don't even live there yet and I feel like a proud Texan already, weird, huh. I think I moved there in my mind already. For those that want to change it, they probably won't like, as I read all the time on these forums. Embrace what Texas has to offer.
We have the chance to move to California, but it just isn't for us. If you move to Texas, I hope you will love it as many, many people do.

Back in the great migration of the 70's I got some new neighbors from upstate New York. They were fairly impressed with Texas, glad they were here and had no plans to return to New York. Their principle awakening...
they didn't know there were so many trees in Texas.

Head over to the Austin forum and you will find a lot of your questions have already been answered. There will be a lot of friendly people to help you out with other questions, and the occasional Austin hater who will tell you that it is hell on earth and to be avoided at all costs. This is balanced off by the Austin cheerleaders who see all things Austin with rose colored glasses. Read the posts, ask a few questions, and form your own opinion based on the feedback you get.
Warning: Take all things said with a grain of salt unless they can be backed up or independently verified. Especially when it comes from a hater or cheerleader.
We've been here a year and are enjoying it. No plans to move back. We have not developed any major gripes, and are enjoying the Texas approach to life.
Good Luck.

Austin, other than the few, older "native sections" of it, isn't very Texan anymore. At All. RIP.
