Zavalla, Texas
Does anyone know anything about a town in East Texas called Zavalla? If so, could you give a "thumbnail" discription of it. I have visited the town and was pleased with what I saw. Can anyone give me details on what living there might be like?

Here's my take on Zavalla:
Speed Trap by State Highway 69 - Zavalla, TX | Find speed traps all over the US | SpeedTrap.org
Other than their CS speedtrap practices it is a typical little EastTexas town. Travel to lufkin for decent shopping. There is a nice little mom and pop grocery in town though. Best thing is the proximity to Sam Rayburn Reservoir and its recreational opportunities.

Drive 53 mph through Zavalla. It's worse than Corrigan.

Thanks for the input. I was more interested in the life style, how friendly folks are. and things to do. Eating places to either eat at or to avoid. Also, the quality of the school system.
Thanks for any input.

Well, when you want specifics you have to ask for them.
Zavalla is tiny ... since you've been there you know that. Lifestyle will be slow and country consistent with a rural setting. Most of East Texas folks are friendly enough. As with a lot of places you'll need to prove yourself a good neighbor to reap full benefit of this. I've mentioned the Lake and its recreational opportunities. Other things to do in Zavalla might include going to church or traveling (as I said) to Lufkin to shop, movies, or choices in eating places ... it 20-25 minutes. I think their are a few places to eat but I haven't eaten at one in 10 years There is a place right at the Hwy 63 / Hwy 147 intersection that at one time had really good platelunches. If you want to cross the lake via Hwy 147 and go to Broadus the Catfish Junction is really good ... about 10-15 minute drive.

I have lived in zavalla for about 5 years.. DOPE central. Rumors. All the thing that come along with a small town. The lake is nice though. School was fun and I had great teachers. Most people are very nice. There are 2 dinners, 2 gas stations, a dollar general, and a small gerocey store. Mostly red necks.. Its not a bad place to live, but If you have kids be careful about who you let them hang around.

Thanks Happycamper09. It is just going to be me and the wife. Our kids are in various parts of the country with their families. We have just made an offer on some property. We spent the weekend in and around the Zavalla area talking to some of the local residents and did a good bit of driving around. We were pleased with what we saw, heard, and found out. The wife and I think we are going to make it our home since we both are retiring just after the first of the year. I am sure that any town, large or small has their problems----but we think Zavalla would be a much better place that the big city we live in now. Thanks again.
