There's a lot of racism there and there is a Ku Klux Klan group that lives there too. A lot of "redneck, backwoods" types there. If you are white/Caucasian, you'll be more appreciated there, but if you're a different race, you'll have to really watch yourself and such.

I grew up in Orange right next door to Vidor. I am a minority. Vidor is not the most progressive town, but people are not going to burn crosses on your front lawn if you are not white. The Klan presence, if any, is nowhere near what people make it out to be. I lived in that area for 30 years until 2000. It is a much safer town than Beaumont. However, the behind-the-scenes racism, is definitely alive and kicking. I wouldn't be afraid to move there as a Hispanic, but if I were African-American, I'd definitely think twice. Not because people would be trying to start physical trouble, but because I think people would say and do a lot of stuff behind the scenes to make a person feel unwelcome. I went to college in Houston, and when black classmates found out where I was from I often got "oh... that's near Vidor?"

I have been to Vidor a few times and am acquainted with some people over there which are good white and Mexican people. I have heard of the racism against blacks or whatever story and it seems to dominate any conversation about Vidor here on C D but putting that aside it's not a bad little city.

You could commute to Beaumont to work and live in Vidor which is smaller and safer.

Wink Vidor, TX

I agree with DanielWayne's opinion of Vidor. I don't live there, however, I do have friends that live there. My friends use to live in Beaumont, and moved due to wanting to have a larger home and land with more open space. I have traveled to Vidor many times. My friends like living there. They are a professional married couple with a young family of Irish and Italian descent originally from Washington DC/VA, and spend some time living in SA, TX. I have always felt welcomed in the town of Vidor and Beaumont.

I, a black male grew up in Beaumont and had a few friends from Vidor. As precautionary measure my folks would advise we meet in Orange or they come to our house in Beaumont. Not because of recent events but because of the past history. Use to play Vidor high in backetball and never had an issue. My dad was even a supervisor at the SBC Engineering facility out there the last 3 years before retirement and only had one incident where some dumb kids threw a bottle at him while he was supervising some fiber construction in the area. Its WAY better than in the past but blacks really wont feel comfortable despite racism not being appearant.

I also grew up in Orange and will definitely say that the Klan presence left Vidor long ago. However, it is still very backwoods and a somewhat trashy (as in white trash) town in my opinion. I would never live there personally.

That really seems to me to be a racist statement.

Bet you wouldn't dare say "black trash" on this forum!

Racist? I'm white myself. Just stating it plainly... Vidor is mostly white people, and it is generally pretty trashy.
