Which city offers best chance of teaching job 2010? God-loving Canadian Gal wonders.
Hi all Texan friends! I'm a really outgoing, young American-Canadian lady that has just about signed up for the T.O.P.P program in San Antonio in the ISD area? Is this the right decision? I want to teach SPED or MANDARIN/FRENCH foreign languages full-time at public school in Texas because I like the culture, the love for Christ, and of course, the WARMTH! Brrrrr....It's getting way too cold up here now.
However, I am concerned, anxious about the demand and supply ratio in San Antonio. Is this lovely city's School Districts hiring in 2010 and 2011? Or does another city have better opportunities, such as Houston, or Dallas?
I heard about hiring freezes. I don't want to make such a major move/relocation and find myself jobless, dear fellow teachers. I have a dependent long distance family to think of besides myself.
In the Bible it instructs us to ask for the advice of any 3 wise and knowledgeable persons and that is what I am doing. But hopefully, there are more than 3 wise people to consult me.
May God bless all the people that help me.
Love,
Miriam H.
P.S. you can personally email me at teach2grow4christ@gmail.com
Maybe if I choose where you live, we can become good friends!

Start by looking at small towns in North or Northwest Texas into the Panhandle or Northeast Texas, i.e. one large buckle of the bible belt. And don't concentrate too hard for a job w/ those languages when you look there.

If you search the Dallas forum, you will see a lot of posts about teachers having a hard time. The variouis ISDs laid off a lot last school year, then hired some back on. Many are looking for jobs. The alt-cert ones seem to be in the most dire situation.

Houston has the largest Chinese population in Texas, especially in Fort Bend County so I dunno if that would be a good or bad thing if you wanted to teach Mandarin. Houston's Vietnamese population is also very large (largest outside of California) & they have some French cultural similarities because Vietnam was once owned by France. I'm not sure about the actual French population in Houston though, but I'm sure its there.

You do realize that, even in Texas public schools, if you talk the God talk, they will fire you?

About Texas teaching jobs. My best friend a major TX univ advisor/professor. She advises all those seeking teaching careers to make sure they speak Spanish (well), teach math or be a special needs teacher. That is where the jobs are. I talked with her just this morning and this is not changing any time soon. Just tryin' to help out here. Good luck to you Canada!

I am the certification officer in a Texas university. Every person we have had graduate with a teaching field in Spanish has received a job. Get the Spanish or bilingual/Spanish certification, and you will have little trouble finding a job.
