Hill Country & Austin suburbs...
What area in Texas hill country do you like best? What area would be the best raise to raise kids(who are into sports) close to lakes and rivers and not too far away from shopping, night life etc. So far I have looked into Dripping Springs and from what I have seen on the internet I like it...but not too sure if there is anything to do around there, I don't want to have to drive so far to get into town.
What Austin suburbs....

In my opinion, you have a lot of options and benefits when you are living in Dripping.
The school system is good and seems to have struck a good balance between academics and sports, and discipline and kids enjoyment of the educational experience. School spirit at the high school is very good. Even though the football team is not doing so well this year, Friday night football games are still very much a community event. It is quite amusing to see a good portion of the crowd leave after half time. That shows that they were coming for the band, the drill team, or other activities or groups that were involved in the game. Its not just about football. The separate naturally into adults and families in one section and high school students in the other section. The middle school students tend to hang around on the pavement around the field and interact with their friends. Not sure how many of them are actually watching the game.
You have easy access to the hill country and all it offers. You are only 20 - 25 minutes from Lake Travis, and a bit farther to the other highland lakes.
On the weekend you can be downtown in 35 -40 minutes for shows, dining or whatever you want to do. For shopping you can head to Barton Square or The Galleria in Bee Caves. Either one is only 20 - 25 minutes.
I find it has the benefits of living in the country with the city amenities not too far away. And the new HEB in Dripping is supposed to be ready this spring. At least they finally have a sign up, and I saw some heavy equipment on the site last week.
If you want to be closer to the city activities, then look into Circle C, or areas around there. But you will not have the hill country charm. It all depends on what you are looking for.

Hi there, we live in Harper, TX (just outside Fredericksburg and Kerrville). Our children attend Harper Elementary and LOVE it. They are ranked an Exemplary school. Sports is really BIG out here. There's so much to do, 4-H, scouting, FFA, church, sports, you name it. If you have any questions, I'm happy to try and answer them: Harperhouse at (@) live.com (without any spaces of course). Blessings on your home hunt. BG

Drippings Springs is a good choice. But so is the general Lake Travis area. LTISD schools are very good and you have many choices in lifestyle. Live in a controlled environment like Lakeway, close to your neighbors in Lakepointe, a little more variable in Apache Shores, near Mack Brown in Vineyard Bay, or in a more rural setting like Spicewood.

The Canyon Lake area is another option. Lots of nice areas to live along Hwy 46 (east of Hwy 281), and along the lake shore (north side of Canyon Lake is very nice). Good river tubing when levels are higher. Also, you're not too far from New Braunfels or San Antonio.

OP, you asked about Austin suburbs, and some of the recommendations you're being given are actually San Antonio suburbs (or Fredericksburg and Kerrville, which are communities in their own right).
Is there a reason why you asked about Austin in particular, or would any of the Hill Country do?

What is better San Antonio or Austin in your oppinion? The hill country seems nice...I just don't want to be too far out in the middle of nowhere. I haven't been to Austin, San Antonio or the hill country area, I have just been internet searching.

I grew up in San Marcos and most of my family still live there. It is an active community with a great deal to do and lots of sports. The San Marcos river runs through town and the Blanco river is closer to Martindale. San Marcos is almost half way between Austin and San Antonio, but has always identified more with Austin. It is a college town and the traffic can be frustrating at times. As for the schools, I know the High School has a good AP program and the elementary schools have a good GT program.
