Default Tyler to Temple

We live in Tyler, TX currently. It's just my wife & I. We are thinking about moving to Temple, TX. Mainly because of the VA center in Temple and it's a smaller town than Tyler. It's getting to be too much of a city in Tyler.

We are going to go look in Temple and I am wondering if any TX residents have any info of what it's like, even compared to Tyler, if any of you know.

We are in a "55 & over" community right now and we would possibly like to find something like that. Either that or at least a quiet area away from the normal city issues.

I work in security and would have to find something like that. My wife doesn't work any more due to health and I only work part time, so finding a job I can do will probably be an issue.

Thanks in advance for any info about Temple.

I wouldn't be able to make any comparisons to Tyler as I've been thru there maybe once in my life but I've driven thru Temple many more than dozens of times and spent considerable time hanging out there.

Once a sweet bit of a railroad town, Temple is becoming a crossroads in Texas... I-35 at Tx36.... X marks the spot. Close by is Belton/Killeen and Fort Hood. There's industrial development and the hospitals... the VA and Scott and White and their relationships with UTexas and A&M. And an Amtrak stop. Not even Waco has an Amtrak stop.

There's plenty of hidden suburbs, lake living, urban or country side homes... in the city or out there some where. You can probly find what you're looking for.

Temple is more faster paced and the metro area is one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the country. The metro area is quickly reaching 400k. Your better off staying in Tyler if you don't want the "city" feel.

Don't go by city populations; look at metro areas. Temple is surrounded by lots of fast growing cities and exceptionally close to Austin.

I'd suggest Waco which is about 40 miles north of Temple. It has much more of traditional hometown city feel compared to Temple; However, it will probably feel more fast-paced than Tyler. It's considered the major city between Austin and Dallas on 1-35.

I think the key here is access to the VA center in Temple. There's plenty of territory around Temple that isn't feeling the bulge of growth. Gatesville, Cameron, Salado... a multitude of burgs within a short commute to Temple and easy access to the VA and Scott/White.

I give a thumbs up to Salado! Nice little town, not too big but still enough to do to keep you busy. It would be close enough to either Temple or Georgetown for anything else you might need. My dad lives in Tyler and takes care of my grandma out on the farm she's lived on for over 30 yrs. (she's 90 yrs. young)! I get up there quite often and you aren't kidding, that place is growing gangbusters. The traffic has gotten ridiculous, especially South Tyler. My dad lives just outside of there in the country but you have to drive through Tyler to get there (at least where I drive from) and it was a nightmare when we were there this summer. I live down the road a bit from Salado in Hutto and my husband commutes to Temple.

Default We got to drive to Temple

We drove over to Temple, before the terrible killings, and looked around. It's Tiny compared to Tyler and the traffic is nothing compared to Tyler. At least Temple has roads that function and a Loop that is being built to be used. Tyler does not have a clue as to how a road system is done and it's horrendous to get around.

We were impressed at Temple and the surrounding area. But, after the massacre, I'm not so sure now........ Terrible thing, but as times get worse and they will, it might be a bad idea to live so close to the biggest Army base in the country. That probably will be one of the first areas to attract more terrorists, bombs and forien troop deployments.

Other than that disaster, we were ready to move there.

Of course with DFW, Houston NASA & the Bases all over TX, it probably doesn't matter anyhow. Texas will be one of the first states to be wiped out, when they come to take over the US.

Thanks all, for the comments. I think we will look at states with no military or huge cities. I was in IA for a few years and it just might be the best thing.......

Temple is nowhere near tiny compared to Tyler; and the traffic gets pretty bad once you head out west of the city (US 90).

Well, I appreciate that and as I say, Temple is out of the running now. The only other town (other then DFW & Houston) that has a hospital, would be Bonham and we have been there, done that. So I think if we move, it will end up being another state. I hate to do that, but the older I get, the less I want to live in a large and busy town....... I also don't want to live in snow any more. I did that too, for about 25 years, but I know IA and at least it's not crowded. There's a multitude of small (under 10,000) towns close enough to a city like Des Moines and I will have to look for VA hospitals. We might never get out of Tyler. We have a home here, but we just don't like Tyler or the surrounding area..... Never have and my wife has some really bad memories here from a previous marriage, so we hate to stay, but it's harder, when you're older, to move........
