well there are parts of Killeen sure, and maybe even a large part, but not all of Killeen is a dump. there are some VERY nice areas if you travel off the beaten path and get away from downtown or 190 or Rancier!!!! did ya ever take a drive on Chaparral? did ya ever drive to the airport or behind the airport?

The reason why I hate Killeen is because of personal issues. The people that I went to visit are boring, so the experience for me wasn't good. The hills in the background are beautiful and the area is very clean and green! If I ever got a chance to go with friends or w/e; I'm sure it would be great because I've heard that the nightlife there is crazy.

Default moving to killeen

People who are posting are saying it's because of the military kids who are bored and are causing trouble...it's so false. You think our kids are that terrible? It's sad and if you live in Killeen why don't you do something in the community to keep the kids from been in trouble...that's whats wrong with society now...all talk and no help.
Did you ever think that most of the crime could've occurred shortly after Hurricane Katrina? Have you done research to see actually when the crime rates increased?
Do you part, get involved with your community and stop giving negative information!!! Killeen is all about what you make it!!

When I think of Killeen one of the first images that comes to mind is dried up fields of grass. Well they do have one of the best named night spots: something to the effect of "Club Ol Skool"

dried up fields of grass can be found in a large part of Texas (central and north and west) during the summers.

I really do feel that people are exaggerating about Killeen, it’s not as bad as it sounds. I live in Harker Heights area and my kids go to an awesome schools. I have lived here for 4 years and I work in Temple, TX there is nothing in that city at all (Temple). I’m glad I choose Harker Heights, TX instead of Temple, the Temple mall doesn’t have as many stores as the Killeen mall. The increase in crime in Killeen is since Katrina but you can still find nice areas to live in also, Harker Heights the houses are more expensive. Everyone is always blaming everything on the “military” but infact the crimes in Killeen had been at an increase since people from hurricane Katrina moved into this area. The military is what’s making these area grow fast that’s why Fort Hood, Tx is one of the fastest growing cities in America.

Default Hiking in Killeen area

For hiking in the local area around Killeen I would check out the state parks. Mother Neff state park, between Temple and Waco, is a start. There is Colorado Bend State park around Lampasas. there is Inks Lake State Park close to Marble Falls. There is Bastrop State park where the "Lost Pines" are. There is Town Lake, now Lady Bird Lake, in Austin for a more urban hiking experience. McKenny Falls State Park just south of Austin is very pretty. Check out the TX Parks and Wildlife website. There are local parks around Stillhouse Hollow Lake and Belton Lake Recreation Area.

I lived in Killeen in the late 60s and early 70s. I never heard of any hiking clubs, but there might be some now. In Austin there are sporting goods stores like REA that sponser outdoor activities.

people definitely overexaggerate how bad killeen is. it's not even CLOSE to some of the "worst" places in texas, let alone the country

Default Good location for teachers

Many people decide to retire here in Killeen. It is important to get into a good social network such as a church or community group, so that the area becomes more like a family community rather than a sterile city. Pay for teachers is higher than most places in Texas and it's growing.
