Houston has at least two lovely communities geared towards outdoor recreation and biking. The Woodlands and Kingwood. Both are relatively close to IAH, have low crime rates and have reasonably priced housing continuing on up into the million+ range. Both have extensive networks of greenbelt trails (Kingwood has around 85 miles, I believe, and The Woodlands has even more) for jogging, walking and biking. Both areas are wooded and home to a wide range of wildlife. Both areas are far enough inland that hurricane storm surge doesn't pose a threat and mandatory evacuation is unlikely.

Houston also meets all the other requirements on your list and typically doesn't experience the ice storms and sometimes ugly winter weather that DFW area does. However I would imagine homeowners insurance is more costly down here near the Gulf and yes, it IS humid.

If you are renting, Texas will serve you well regarding low taxes. If you own a home, the property taxes are incredibly high. Of course, there are no state income taxes.

Nevada and CA both have very, very, severe state budget problems to the point that it is affecting everyday life. There was a proposal to close all of the state parks in CA that somehow was not implemented, but since they will have to find a way to cut an additional 7 -10 billion dollars from the budget next year, it's hard to see how it will escape this time. That might affect your love of hiking.

Even though there is a state income tax in CA, we have received a refund of all of the taxes withheld in the last three years. The people that get hit with the state income taxes in CA are the high income earners. Of course, if you are in this group, it is definitely a consideration. Nobody believes me when I say this, but our overall tax bill went down in CA compared to Texas. This is because property taxes here are lower and we are not in the high income group that get hits with the state income taxes.

Crime is all three states depends on where you live. Oakland is really bad, so are some parts of LA, Houston and San Antonio. On the other hand, Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks, CA are in the top ten safest cities in the entire U.S. I don't know as much about Nevada.

In my opinion Austin is the best city in Texas to live if you like outdoor activities.

All this talk about outdoor activity, which you can find almost anywhere.

The OP wants a major airport, zoo and museums too. That makes it more limited, especially if we're talking about the larger & better ones.

* botanical gardens and horticultural activities

* reasonable housing

Does anyone have any suggestions for great cities and towns we should check into?
Check out some of the bedroom communities between Austin and San Antonio. You're pretty much close to everything you described. I think San Antonio's one of the coolest cities in Texas.

Weather in DFW is not as nice as some places in California. But the people here are very kind!
